I used to live in Sheffield and the Don used to be known as the dirtiest river in Europe
I nearly attended Sheffield University. I recall on the open day being told how they once had annual raft races on the river, but they had to stop them as the water had started to disolve the polystyrene floats.

Took part in the race myself while at Sheffield. most notable was the team who parked! their raft next to us; fiine if you didn't mind getting wet! They had made theirs out of tyres, the rims not the inner tubes, so it sank!!!!!

(you have no idea how good it is to have my memory improving! For someone who didn't remember his dad had died6 years ago, or recognise my wife! its bloody great!)

Good news:) . Mind you, when I was training last May,for my Staffs Way walk. I went over the Trent at Shugborough/Great Haywood, and spotted a couple of lads fishing, who had keep nets in!. I was a bit surprised when they revealed they had, had a couple of tiddlers! Just shows how amazingly nature can cure itself. This input should speed the process along of course! Might get my rod out! Ooo Err Mrs ;)
