Thats because the cuts are also worse than ever. Anyone who grew up poor under Thatcher has a good idea of what is coming, and it won't be nice.

People have short memories.
more so when the cuts dont affect them and only the less fortunate in society.
yes , this government is nasty but its the people of this country who asked for it :(

Really?

We live in a screwed up world, quickly heading back to the Victorian Times when there was true class separation. I just know some politician is going to spout we should return to "Victorian Values" soon and that will be the end. That's the trouble when you educate the masses- they realise that they are just as good as you and that they have a right not to be treated poorly. We need a big war to get rid of some of the oiks and keep them in their place so our Masters can continue with their job of ruining, sorry running, the country.

A war?

Only the BAE Systems shareholders come off well from a war

Stafford people will...

Vote Conservative after the party says it will impose extreme public spending cuts

Then sign a petition in the Market Sq against NHS cuts

Then vote Conservative again

I think....

This is a black comedy being carried out by aliens in a cupboard under the stairs

But what do I know

But it must be pointed out that the current round of austerity is due to a previous government telling us we can have our cake and eat it. Then leaving a note for the incoming government saying sorry there is no money left good luck. The current government are still to ballance the books and won't within this parliament. more cuts and tax rises are to come. had the government of the late 90's and 00's saved for a rainy day then the public finances would be in a much better position now.

Your mystery history tour gets better

The previous Government was a Conservative coalition Government

Why not blame Harold Wilson or even Henry VIII

The present Government will never ever 'balance the books' it's 'plan' involves relying heavily on high inflation

Aren't we borrowing more now than ever, despite the cuts? It's just a matter of priority, they're happy to buy a very expensive weapon we'll never use whilst telling us there is no money for education and healthcare.

In that case can't we blame Thatcher? If we'd not sold off our energy supply and council houses we'd be quids in.

There is a rather long list of short sighted sales of public assets attributed to the Conservative Party

But you won't find that information in the above 'newspapers'

I think if you looked into it a lot closer , you will find we owe more now than we did before Hameron & Gideon got handed the country purse.
Sure , they will claim its lower , but its all down to how and when the figures are manipulated.

as a footnote , they also said that we are all in it together ... however, unlike a section of the disabled , ive not seen many fatcat companies taking suicide as the best option out of this mess.

Compared to years ago, the UK is doing well, these days people consider themselves poor if they can't afford the latest car or 50" wide screen TV.
Its funny that all the so cold poor people have satalite dishes on there houses and smoke, I grew up in the 50s in a council house and know what poverty is.
My father and two elder brothers worked down the coal mines long days underground, no pithead showers and all they got for it were bad chests and short lives.
I think the definition of poor should be redefined to remind people what poverty really is and take a look at other countries around the world.

No car, no satellite and my TV is 40", maybe I should quit work!

Don't worry about redefining poor, we're heading towards times that will make people think fondly of thatcher.

There is plenty of money around - you only have to look at how many 'personalised' number plates there are.

My car is approaching ten years old*, no telly (so, no satellite dish), once smoked part of a cigarette for theatrical purposes in a film. Lived in MOD housing, or associated private "hirings", as they were called. My father spent considerable amounts of time away on various deployments, including a whole year, just before Aden was abandoned.

You tell kids that today and they won't believe you.

We live in a society where rich people can have a history of serial failure, yet have to be attracted by stupid salary levels, and where poor people must be ground down to give them an incentive to work harder. If you can get over the hump to go from 'us' to 'them', you are basically safe for ever...

* I don't really want the latest car, if somebody hits this one too hard, I would be looking for an identical car...
