I noticed quite a few men playing games in the Shrew one Sunday .mmm I will rephrase that looks like they were gamers .you get my drift
I remember one of these in the Railway when Lee Middle kept it nearly fifty years ago

No, not me, but I know someone who did.
That’d be me then. At least until the ripoff bastards put the price of the coffee up to £1-10.
It was a handy place to go while I waited for the post office to open so I could cash me giro. I don’t do online 😉

Not quite a proper Devil amongst the Tailors board
Indeed, but an approximation I found easily.
I've not looked if there's one in The Emporium at 1 Market Street that opened last year in a closed shop ( back on topic )

According to Facebook, Geek Retreat has closed permanently, which is a real shame. Daughter and I loved our visits there.
Ah damn, that sucks.

They had surprisingly good food and the staff were always really chill

Weird that they haven’t posted on socials yet

Yep, been down there today… Geek Retreat is indeed closed

That really does suck, the owners and staff were passionate about that business and it always sucks to see that get stamped out. I don’t think they could have been doing too terribly if they were about to hire more staff either?

Hiring more staff, or hiring more staff to replace ones that had left???

Either way it’s a very sudden closure if they were doing that

Especially with the knowledge that 20 other Geek Retreats closed last year, and a bunch of them have stopped posting on socials recently.

Realistically it’s not the kind of place that would fall over if their staff all left overnight as the owners were very present.

Through the grapevine…

Sounds like head office weren’t happy with the numbers, I suspect they’ve just done a cull of a few shops too given how many have gone quiet.

Of course what they deem to be good profits is different to what is able to sustain a business, as it sounds like they take 8% of revenue. Entirely possible they had the same targets for a Stafford franchise as a Stoke or Birmingham franchise which is totally unrealistic, but we will likely never know.

Daft really, it’s not like it costs central much to have a franchise running.

So, if numbers were OK, a chance for them to come back independently?

Assuming they were, yeah.

The lease will be with the franchisee company, so they’re on the hook for that anyway - might as well at least try, right? Not having to pay 8% of revenue and buy stock at higher than you can buy it elsewhere (yep, GR profit on selling their franchises stock and take a revenue cut) would help too.

That being said it depends on whether there’s any non-compete clauses in the license agreement, they’re completely unenforceable for employer/employee relationships but B2B is a different matter. And the owners really got put through the wringer with the flooding, the break in (IIRC?), various issues with the utilities, etc so I wouldn’t blame them for cutting their losses even though they’re clearly really passionate about this.

Are you competing if they closed down the only place you could be competing with, which was you?

You'd be surprised what show up in franchisee Ts and C's.... John Oliver did a segment on it a while back in regards to subway franchises...
