But now Stafford station will see at least 4 HS2 trains per hour instead of 1 as part of the fallback plan. Stafford to London journey times will be only 54 minutes saving 21 minutes on current times it's a win-win for Stafford surely?
If it adds more capacity, maybe

HS2’s big thing was never reducing journey times - people just latched onto that. The big thing was massively increasing capacity

It does, at first glance, look like it's mostly win-win for Stafford, but there are new congestion issues that the cancellation of HS2 phase 2 creates. I think the main pinch points are Colwich junction and Shugborough tunnel; also Stafford station may need some improvements as well.

One other point, once HS2 commences, your journey time of 54 minutes will be for Stafford to Old Oak Common for the foreseeable future. Changing onto an Elizabeth Line service is likely to add in excess of 20 minutes into central London to you journey, negating any time saving benefits of HS2's higher speeds.

Whichever government is in charge, after the next election, needs to quickly restart the extension works to Euston if FS2 is to have any chance of being a success. Connecting HS2 to HS1 should also be a priority, as this could offer real competition to short haul flights such as Liverpool/Manchester/Birmingham to Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam etc.

Ah, but have they sold the land between Old Oak Common and Euston off yet?
Not if the line between Old Oak Common and Euston hasn't been cancelled.
That's right, work between Old Oak Common and Euston hasn't been cancelled, it's been 'paused' until it can be fully funded (i.e. the current government isn't prepared to continue providing the necessary funds for that section of HS2).

If that happens whilst also maintaining current WCM services I’ll eat my hat. THE biggest reason to justify HS2 is capacity on existing mainline routes. We’re already at it. That means no capacity to move more freight by rail and no capacity for faster services on lines that also support local stopping services.

The idea that an hour and twenty by train isn’t good enough will never justify the cost (and then the ticket cost). Manchester to London take 2:15-3 hours now and reducing that whilst freeing up and creating capacity did make it worthwhile.

The country has stopped growing in terms of GDP largely because of navel-gazing bureaucracy and policy and nimby dimwits.

I think it would save some confusion and frustration of signs were more specific.
Surely locals would get a better grasp, instead of just “this road is closed” it should give a direction? Wolvo Road signs saying the road is closed will throw those that don’t know it will be one way. Surely it ain’t rocket surgery? 🤡

Roadworks Radford Bank, 4-22 March 09:30-15:00

Early works taking place ahead of a major improvement scheme on a main Stafford road continue on March 4.

The investigative works on the A34 between Weeping Cross and Queensville are needed to carefully plan the full scheme of improvements on the road later this year. This will include full resurfacing together with new cycleways, pedestrian improvements and upgraded crossings from Weeping Cross to the junction with the A449 roundabout.

From this Monday March 4 to Friday March 22, temporary traffic management will be needed to carry out these works safely. Two-way traffic signals will be operated manually on Radford Bank near Meadow Ridge on weekdays only between 9.30am and 3pm. The left-hand lane at the top of Radford Bank to turn onto the A513/Baswich Lane will also be closed throughout this period.

The scheme is part of a £9million package of improvements through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, which will see new walking and cycling routes along the A34 in Stafford and Cannock in addition to road repairs.

Part of Queensway (next to Aldi, B & M) blocked off by police & cars being diverted through the Aldi delivery yard access, as a lamppost leaning into & across the rd.

3 car smash on A34 near Redhill roundabout caused by cars doing illegal u turns.

Also, the one way access at the windmill has changed, you can only access it from the opposite direction now. (Access from castle town, instead of from Chell rd)

Enjoying a drop of red.

No it hasn't, or at least it hadn't when I rode down it 40 minutes ago.
