Surely her taking maternity leave is not an issue for anybody? She's perfectly entitled to.
Yes indeed and I doubt if anyone on here would agree with her having " received dozens of phone calls from angry constituents who have berated her for taking time off after the birth of her child" if that did occur.
It's just unfortunate that if an MP takes maternity leave the position apparently remains vacant unlike any other occupation where someone else would temporarily step into the role.

Her office staff handle 99% of the casework in any event so no problem there. As for voting, pairing arrangements are in place for such eventualities. As regards her not appearing in the constituency for six months, I doubt anyone other than a stalker would have noticed the difference.

But you are quite right, women who want to be MPs should not have any right to maternity leave. Why should they want to spend time they'll never get again with their babies. Maybe you could start a campaign to ensure that they are forced to give birth on a Friday evening, thereby ensuring that they can get back to work the following Monday?

Maybe the candidate that came second should get the opportunity to fill in for the leave period?

Who came second in Stafford?
Joyce Stil apparently from Hampshire. Would be a bit of a long commute for her but I'm sure her wealth of local knowledge would stand her in good stead...

Hopefully Labour will actually find someone competent and local to fight the next election in order to actually stand a fighting chance.

That's a remarkable misinterpretation of my views.
Only this morning I replied "Yes indeed" to your "Surely her taking maternity leave is not an issue for anybody? She's perfectly entitled to."

I've not implied anything as to your views. But you have mentioned this maternity leave business in a number of your posts about our beloved MP, so clearly it is something that matters to you. I was simply seeking to reassure you that procedures are in place for such eventualities so that constituencies do not go unrepresented and offering you a look at what the alternative could be if society decided to remove maternity rights from female MPs

'Society' is unlikely to be allowed to decide it, but cabinet ministers have openly promoted the reduction of maternity entitlements recently.

And, as with pay restraints, it's unlikely to be applied to MPs, should they ever decide to do it, on behalf of society.

Compared to many of what used to be our European friends, maternity and paternity rights aren't exactly top-drawer in any case.
