I finally went for lunch at The Post House today and I was rather impressed!
I've spent an awful lot of time in that building: standing aside my mum when I was a kid; queueing as a spotty adolescent when I was doing my work experience; trying to send stuff in general as an adult. When I heard the old post office was being converted I felt quite sad that the history of such a lovely building might be lost. I think they've done a great job.
Four of us went for lunch today and it was the first time 3 of us had been at all. I'd been eyeing-up the Eggs Benedict for a while, until we decided we'd rather wait until 12pm for the main menu to be available. I did something I can't remember ever having done before...I ordered a salad. Cobb Salad: Chicken, blue cheese, bacon, avocado etc. I was worried it might be a bit skimpy or lettuceful (it is a word), but it was a decent amount of everything. The only problem was that the avocado was about as unripe as I've ever had. It shouldn't be the texture of a raw potato and was the only bad thing in my bowl. Bad show. My friend Ben had the Potted duck...it looked delightful, but it needs a lot more bread than was given. He didn't ask for any extra but you'd have expected a lot more than a couple of slices.
The girlies both had sarnies. They were both well-filled and delicious, and the sarnies weren't bad either!
The main gripe (oh....here we go...) was the service. We were the only ones in there for the first 45 mins, yet the bar staff seemed oblivious to our presence other than when I went to the bar to ask for a teapot refill or to order the food. Each time I went to ask something there were 2 or 3 people standing at the bar, having a chat. Not once did someone pop round to see if we wanted more drinks or to ask if we wanted to order food, even though we'd stated that it was our intention to do both. By the time we left there were 4 others in the entire building, but the staff seemed totally unaware, though they were very nice when at the table.
6/10. The food was good and the decor is great, but why only do 3/4 of what's required. There was a young girl dressed in a tennis outfit standing in the rain out the front. She was giving free coffees (I think) to entice people in. We were already in.
I will go again, but they need to level things out.
