Expand on real money and how do you compare to prices across the road for different products?
Are they really different products? Both pubs have real ales, both have fridges full of "exotic" beers and ciders, etc.

I like both pubs and use them depending on what their real ale offerings are at the time.

And yes some people still use cash.

But is the Ship Aground still just "something for the weekend", open only five hours on a Friday and eleven on a Saturday ?

I'm not sure to be honest, the opening hours seem to be very random so it's more of a spontaneous visit when I go rather than planning an evening there.

But it didn't work for the previous owner.

Yeah but apparently the prices have gone down now and the decor is better according to juliettango, who probably works there :)

All seriousness maybe i'll check it out if the place has more character than a hospital ward now, and not stupidly expensive

Think that it is now open from 4pm Thursday, Friday & Saturday, at least according to the pub Facebook page

To be fair their prices have come down significantly since the new owners took over and the new decor is far better!

100% agree. I was in the Ship Aground on Friday and had a lovely pint of a Pollys beer.

If you want to drink cheap crappy larger or naff real ale there are plenty of alternatives to go too. I'd rather drink quality beer.

So to get a quality beer or ale, I have to pay Three pound for a Third of a beer?

Noone was saying that. I think we know there's alternatives to go to, but pre-take over there was other places with quality beer, cider and ale, for a lot less..... and a better atmosphere /Decor /ambience

Luckily it's been took over so it's not going to be a empty building, but there was a reason they was struggling before- but yes fresh start.

I guess that depends on the beer, and what other places sell the same beer for, but I'm assuming anything you buy in thirds must be a bit special?

Not that I've been a regular anywhere since the floodgate closed TBH

And how much it costs the normally small breweries who supply this type of pub to make the beer.

I go to places like this (never actually been there, but love Candid) to try different types of beer and not to get drunk. We're all different and that's why there are different sort of establishments. I don't go to the Coach or to Spoons but I don't go on and on about it.

I think you get what you pay for.

Ship Aground, Candid and Tap house are offering beer that you won't find in many other places and they sell beer from the small breweries, hence the higher prices. Having said that Candids larger is actually cheaper than some of the beer sold at some other pubs in Stafford.

I like Ship Aground but its not my favourite pub in Stafford. I'm more likely to be seen in the Sun, Rose & Crown or Candid because I prefer the decor / ambience of those places.

But with Small Brewers' Relief they pay much less tax and so surely it should be lower prices.
As for cheaper lager Stafford's four Dorbiere pubs - Joiners Arms, Kings Arms, Metropolitan Bar, Star and Garter - have the proper Dortmunder lager imported from Germany and it's stronger and somehow cheaper than the commonplace British lagers.
Is the Ship Aground still 'Card Only'?
