The Vine Hotel

Having lived in Stafford for a number of years until today I had never been in the place, not through any act of purpose - just because it has never really crossed my mind. Today me and Mrs FDR were out in town and met up with some friends from out of town - as they were from out of town they understandably left it to us to choose a lunch venue, and so we opted for the Vine.

OK, it is only fair to start with the positives. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior - it has a nice cosy feel about it - oldie worldie but without being manky. Obviously didn't see the rooms but thought to myself this looks like an OK place to say or recommend to anyone wanting town centre accommodation alternative to The Swan.

We found a table (the place was busy but by no means packed) and sat down, this is where things started to go down hill. We asked the waitress the most simple of questions, for example what beers do you have on, what are the specials - she just said "I dunno" not "I'm not sure, l'l go and check, come back and let you know" it was just a blank, pasty faced, vacant "dunno". We ended up going to the bar to check what drinks they had & what the was on the specials. Not a great start.
The waitress then came back to take our order, all was good - short while later the drinks were bought over, still good. Didn't have to wait too long and three of the four meals came out. The waitress apologied and said that the fourth would "be along in 3 minutes" Three minutes came and went and turned into ten, which turned into twenty, still no fourth meal. The other three weren't cold but were a little on the cool side, as if they had been sitting in the kitchen for a bit waiting for someone to pick them up and take them out into the dining room.
Eventually after the three of us had finished we complained at the bar about the elusive meal, they apologied and to be fair agreed to not charge for the fourth meal, which did eventually turn up. we then had to sit and watch the unfortunate fourth meal person eat having long since finished and run out of drinks

In conclusion not great and when you are taking friends to a place and it turns out to be not great this has added embarrassment. It not only makes you look like a plum but also makes the town in which you live look like a shambles.
Such a shame as the place and the food (if you give the benefit of the doubt over the luke warm bit) was good, good portions etc and decent value but totally and utterly destroyed by the cronic lack of service. It just isn't good enough.

We ended up having lunch in The Vine yesterday as The Bear Grill was rammed, as was The Swan when it started raining a little. The food was quite good and, unlike FDR's experience, it all came out at the same time. I went for the Ox cheek casserole which was on the specials board and it was really tasty, if a bit tough.

The only thing that lets the place down, as highlighted by FDR, is the customer service. I've not been anywhere in ages where the staff have been so miserable and unforthcoming. The girl who served us at the bar was the same girl who came to the table to take our order...not once did she raise a smile or make us feel welcome. I'm sure she had many better things to be doing than working on a Saturday afternoon, but as part of the job I'm sure her boss would expect her to at least appear to be cheery and welcoming. Well...I say that, but the manager lady (not sure if she's the landlady or not) was equally miserable and uninterested. It felt like we were a hindrance, and that's really not a good thing if they want repeat custom.

We went into the Vine the other evening with a view to eating there and found that they now charge city centre hotel prices for drinks and unsurprisingly the only clientele in there were their hotel guests. The only other presence in the place was an overbearing drain stench around the reception area.

The ladies toilets were in a disgusting state according to Mrs H.

The menu was equally expensive and unimpressive and quite a surprise compared to when the previous landlady was in situ. We were scowled at by the barmaid and the manageress when they saw us commenting to each other about the prices.

Needless to say we left with our expensive bottle of wine and moved on to the comforts of Narvana.

I'm not sure which market the Vine are trying attract but the level of non service and ambience do not in any way match the prices they are trying to charge.

That drain smell has been knocking around for years, I do wish they'd sort it out.

We've been in a couple of times recently, and have to say we've been treated pretty well! That said, I know a couple of people who won't set foot back in there as the service received was shocking.

I shall continue to frequent there until such a time as I experience the poorer side of service.....have got to go back at least once as I need to ask a favour!! (Hopefully will speak to someone who isn't tooo "vacant"!)

Last night I visited the Swan and was quite impressed. The staff were very friendly in particular the Assistant manager who was hospitable and chatty and the pint that I had was very nice. I did note a faint smell as I walked in which I am assuming by previous comments maybe the drains. I raised this with the lady at the bar who informed that Banks's are aware of the issue and have done some investigation regarding the cause. The problem is at the moment is that there is some kind of disagreement regarding the ownership and responsibilty of the drain preventing the issue from being resolved.

Sorry I'm confused, you seem to start off by talking about the Swan on a thread about The Vine? Do you actually mean The Vine?

To be honest from my earlier experience I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt. If I have a bad food or drink experience in any place then I'm usually prepared to give it another go (anyone can have an off day) if I go back a second time and somewhere is still terrible then I don't generally darken their doorstep with my custom again

Wandered into the Vine tonight for a pre-Shuttleworth bite. Two Farmer's Pies for a tenner - and quite decent they were, too. Seemed fair enough to me..

Had a terrible meal in here yesterday. Well...a couple of mouthfuls of a terrible meal!

On the chalkboard behind the bar there was a roast beef sandwich served with roast potatoes and gravy for £3.95. No brainer. Myself and my colleague ordered one each.

As soon as the food arrived it was evident that something was very wrong. I really don't know how to describe the 'roast potatoes', but they certainly weren't like anything I've ever had before...or ever wish to again. I can't decide what the cooking process may have been when they were originally cooked, which was probably on Sunday, but for our meal they'd been freshly microwaved and were rubbery/slimy/revolting. On the odd occasion I've had roast spuds left over from the day before and have heated them up the next day they have never resembled these things.

The roast beef was dry, chewy and stringy, and had almost certainly been microwaved too. It was all very wrong.

We gave the food back and got a refund.

I used to go to the vine often - they used to do lovely crocks of stew with bread, but haven't been for ages because the standard of food seems to to have deteriorated has anyone had a good meal there recently

Many moons ago they use to peel the spuds the day before and leave them standing in water in the large refrigerator in a bucket. They never tasted fresh and I'll never forget the taste, even now if I taste that flavour again in a spud I assume that's how they've prepared them and make a mental note never to eat there again.

This worth popping in for a pint?

Haven't been for quite some time.
They used to have a varied selection from the Marston's stable, Jennings, Breakspears, Wychwood etc. These days it's just Banks and Pedigree. Reasonably priced though.

That's fine, but you could have a fine selection of beer in the divest of dives, eh?

I should have said, i'm talking overalls, sorry, overall.
