@darts22 will of course be able to put us right, but wherever I read it at the time asserted that the original Saracen's Head was trading first.

A quick check of the Inns & Alehouses of Stafford suggests the Saracens Head was up & trading before 1468. The Hollybush website somewhat vaguely suggests "its origins are claimed to reach as far back as 1190", but whether there's any documents supporting that I don't know.

The Holly Bush (they seem to use the name both with and without the space) claim - "The historic Holly Bush Inn is generally recognised as being the second licensed pub in the country."

Darts22's opinion would be valuable.

Mmm, I can remember them making a big thing of being the second oldest licence after the Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham - but, they don't even make this (possibly speculative) list. http://www.buzzfeed.com/lbailey211/11-pubs-that-might-be-the-oldest-pub-in-the-uk-e9sd#.jh5MRdRq

The Skirrid Inn dates from the mid 17th century & no earlier according to CADW. There are claims that the Trip to Jerusalem did not become a pub until the mid 19th century when it took over the name and the stories from a neaby inn which had just closed; there are no buildings in the area on a town map of 1610 & the evidence is that it was built 1650-60. Fighting Cock a 16th century dovecote built on the site of a monastic watergate, not a pub until much later. Old Ferry Boat Inn early 17th century, no earlier evidence. There are no pubs/inns/alehouses/whatever refered to in Domesday Book. Basically do not believe any pub which claims to date before about 1590 at the earliest. There are a number of famous old inns which are earlier, most were monastic hostels which became inns at the dissolution of the monastries.

Earliest in this area probably 1 Vine/Saracens Head. 2 Crown Stone. 3 Swan, Stafford.

We've been using the Vine regularly for three years or so. Never had any problem with the food or the prices. Since the Shrew changed hands its become the place where I spend Friday afternoons chilling and avoiding helping her with the shopping.
The only problem I do have with the place is that eith the building is subsiding slightly, or i'm growing. Twice in the past fortnight I've nearly sparked myself out on low beams that I didn't even get close to grazing before. Oh, and the wifi seems hit and miss with the new system they've had installed.

Shrew or shrewd, it doesn't make sense, unless there's a Shrew public house some where in Stafford?
