In some areas of life there is a generational divide, although often this is the youngsters assuming old farts don't have a clue.

Earlier today I came across a male in his 30s who had bought a toaster off eBay which was posted from Germany and hence had an EU plug. At the age of 30 he didn't know that you could cut the molded plug off and wire a new one in a few minutes.

Sure times have changed and molded plugs are now the norm but I really do wonder about the state of the next generation if they are so clueless.

Sometimes it seems funny how the youngsters laugh at us old farts but lack such basic knowledge such as wiring a plug or making a cement mix.

Have you seen an cocky youngster and then thought to yourself you really don't a clue, feel free to share your stories.

Products of a consumer generation.
Having said that, I'd happily knock up a couple of barrow loads of concrete or fit a plug, I'd even stretch to a bit of curtain rail fitting in exchange for a bit of computer wizardry or similar modern skills.

Have you been on the booze John ?

Not sure what your incoherent mumbling have to do with a general lack of basic life skills and loss of basic knowledge.

Have you ever wired a plug ? If not perhaps your part of the problem ?

A good war'll sort them out..

What a rediculous response. We have an aging population, no reserves or cash pile for things like pensions and not enough youngsters being born to support the aging population of this country. Why on earth would we want to loose the young generation to war, we need more of them to support the elderly.

A Meccano set should be standard issue at the age of five. (Actually, could that be an election manifesto pledge ?)
I had a Trix set.

I don't think there's any need for a personal attack on Mr Marwood.

I've never wired a plug, nor made cement. Haven't ever needed to, and I think I'm correct in saying none of my kids have either. By the time they were old enough to wire a plug, electrical products were being manufactured with moulded plugs.
Now curtains rails, I put all mine up the day I moved in here, and, I put the ones up in my parents home way back in 1980, when I was only 16.
We each have a set of skills, and just because someone is lacking in one, doesn't mean they are rubbish at everything.

I believe that one of the few 230V electrical items with a fitted flex that you can sell new, by way of retail, without a fitted plug, is a mains-powered pond pump, as the flex is expected to have to pass through a wall on its way to the socket.

I have known of several incidents where people have been confused, sometimes to the point of returning the goods, by the polythene anti-scratch sleeves that appear on some 13A plugs these days - the pins are too big for the holes....

So what was the point of his Daily Mail rant ? It was totally out of context in relation to the subject matter, hence me believing he has had a tipple or two.

There was no assertion that anyone was rubbish, more pointing out that some very basic skills are missing. You don't need to have ever wired a plug to realise that the cable can be cut and a new end connected without the need for a converter.

I rest my case. How could anyone believe this would conduct power ?

I think it it's easy to say "kids today eh" but aren't they the product of society and their upbringing?
It would be silly to generalise as no 2 persons experiences are exactly the same and the vast majority of youngsters are well rounded hard workers with a social conscious.
Saying that I wonder if the overtly positive attitude in education doesn't always help youngsters if they're kept on being told how great they are and pushing so many through the University route when many would be better doing apprenticeships. I've also noticed that a number of parents 'helicopter' their children and whilst we all want the best for our children sometimes they need to make their own way in the wide world.
