Has anyone else noticed the lack of birds, every year at this time i put a feeder up full of nuts, this year i put it up a week ago and it hasn't been touched and i have not seen any of the little birds in my garden that i usually see.

There has been a major lack of birdy action round my way recently, which i put down in part to a marked increase in puddy tats. At least that's what i tawt i taw.

I don't think they are killing them, just detering them - and there's one of the pesky varmints that eats the bread i put out for them. :grr:

There's often an apparent dearth of avians at this time of year, as various migrations leave and arrive, not necessarily in synchronism. Feeding patterns change as Autumn gives way to winter, etc..

That's the one - greenfinches are becoming quite a rare sight round these parts these days, though i did see one a couple of weeks ago, whereas they used to be very common.

I suspect the greenfinch's loss is the goldfinch's gain, however - goldfinches used to be a rare sight round here, now i regularly see flocks of as many as 15-20 burbling away overhead. Which is nice.

At this time of year the birds hide away to shed their plumage. I keep chickens and they're doing the same thing. They moult and shed their feathers in order to cope through the winter and they hide away in hedges and safe places to do so, as they are very vulnerable as this time. My chickens don't lay when they moult. They can't produce feathers and eggs at the same time. Don't worry. Kep puttng food out for them - they're coming out of the moult about now. They will take berries fro rowan, cotoneaster and the like but keep putting food out in the feeders for them They'll soon run out of natures fruit and seeds and need our help in the gardens. Please don't give up ...

I don't know what it is, but on Coton fields there is a eagle type bird that sits on the street light opposite us, and all the birds disappear!
