I spent a good bit of my youth seeing the occasional transport go by, with real or practice nuclear weapons on. You never really knew when it was a real one, but people did seem a bit more professional sometimes.
I always felt more at risk from British and US ones in the locality, than the Russian variety with a long, arduous journey to make.
I felt fairly confident that a lot wouldn't get to the target and actually go off. Getting out of the silo, having been there for years, flying all the way, actually to the target point, and then functioning correctly, always seemed an unlikely sequence to complete satisfactorily...
