What Car ?.......

I'm soon to purchase a new motor as this will probably be my last ever car I need something that's going to give me 10-15 years of trouble free motoring. I currently average 3k miles a year and no doubt this will only decrease. I shopped around and have a final 3 models of which I will choose 1. They are Corsa, Escort and Yaris I just need some sound advice which I should plump for. So all comment will be gratefully received.......

All these dodgy magazines have such similar names....

Have you looked at Hyundai/Kia, especially as you intend to keep it for so long?

With only doing 3000 miles you will still need a yearly service. I've had KIA's and the warranty is now 7 years or 100,000 miles. Hyundai is similar.

If you value longevity over a 'sporty' drive, which I fancy you probably do, then you should take a look at a Hyundai i10 or i20. Five year warranty and rarely go wrong. Same with their Kia clones, except you get a 7 year warranty with them! The downside to Kia is that you would have to trek across to Burntwood for a service.

My wife has a Fiesta and though it is a great car to drive, it has hardly proved the most reliable car on earth since it left the showroom. My friend's wife has a Corsa and it is crap, they will not be buying another.

Definitely worth a look. I'm driving a six-year-old Getz - faultless.

i10, i20, ix20 or even an i30, if you're feeling flash.

You probably already know this but just in case...

Irrespective of what car you end up buying, with the kind of mileage you are talking about you should NOT buy a diesel.

For the sort of miles you'll do, there won't be much to choose. They're all fairly reliable these days. I've had two auto Getzs and the current manual one. The manual is significantly more economical - but, over 3,000 miles, it's only a few gallons. The autos are nice, especially around town and when parking. I drove one of the autos in very dodgy winter conditions in Ireland and had none of the issues that I was expecting.

My dad has an i30 auto, which is very good. When it went in for a service they lent him and i20 auto. He thought it was just as smooth as the one in his i30 (in fact it's the same 'box as he had in his previous shaped i30) and said it still felt nippy around town and had a bit of oomph to it when he took mum for lunch in Lichfield in it.

He did 87000 miles in his old i30 in 5 years and the only thing that went wrong was a dodgy FM radio earth, which got sorted speedily and without any fuss under warranty, hence why he didn't even bother looking at other cars and just got another Hyundai when the time came.

I bought a 2 y.o.Yaris and ran it for almost 8 years. When I traded it in it had just under 100,000 miles on the clock. Mechanically it was still as sound as the day I bought it. I worked with 2 other people who had even older models and I cannot remember ever hearing anybody complaining about unreliability. The only constraint is internal space, and I have moved on to bigger Toyota, otherwise I would probably be still flogging the original model up to it's second century.

The problem with an auto Yaris is it's that bloody stupid whiny rubber-band transmission pioneered by DAF decades ago. Otherwise I agree they are very reliable like all Toyotas.

My Mum bought a Hyundai i10 in September 11 and has been pleased with it. One reason she bought it was the five year warranty as it will also be her last car (unless a lottery win happens). Oh and it's only £20 a year for the vehicle excise license and if I remember right the first year was free.

I'd also suggest looking at Hyundai /Kia, they seem to be very good cars. Have you had a look at Dacia? Although a new brand over here, they are very popular on the continent, with lots of them used as taxis (model dependent obviously) so can't be too bad.

Oddly enough a Duster cut me up on the A14 near Rothwell this afternoon, when I say me I mean Gilbert as he was driving and boy was the air blue. Even bluer when further on Corley Services were shut and the old sod needed a leak........

There were a few Dacias around in the 70s and 80s - mostly the 1300, based on the Renault 12.

They made estate and pick-up versions, too.

The ARO 10 was marketed here as the Dacia Duster in the late 80s.
