Wasn't there at some stage plans to add n other sports facilities to that site to remove them from prime development spots?

They're turning the whole of Stafford into a huge crazy golf course...Stafford Castle is the first obstacle...pop it into the battlements and it rolls out down the hill towards town, then you have to chip into Broadeye Windmill...if you get it well-timed it drops down just in time to thwack it to Plumbits where it visits all their current stock (takes frickin ages..imagine Mousetrap..)...not sure what happens then cos i'm shit and I lose..

pop80 i hope your jokeing coz thats the sort of blinkered opinion that gets golf a toffee nosed image.
there was so much planning etc gone into this venture so as wildlife, public access, enviromental and historical stuff wouldnt be affected you wouldnt believe !
but hey ho never mind, if you would rather yet another industrial estate or housing estate.......... more traffic, congestion, noise.....possible loss of a historical site????

Hey
Thanks for replies.
But the golf course is the other side of the castle, it would have to be an awfully long road.

They are doing work on the field opposite the traffic lights on the exit from Western Downs onto the Newport Road.

Is the old golf course being retired and a new one built?

Is the castle going to be slap bang in the middle of the course?

So a lovely walk makes way for the rich middle classes dressed stupidly, whacking a small ball around with twigs, stunning.

Oh well at least its not houses.
As I've been involved in this project for the last few years it's a shame that people are so blinkered, it's things like that that have held it up for so long. We had to have about 6 newt surveys!

The entrance to the golf course will still be where it is now, the road is an access road for the plant, as I said previously. It'll be taken up once the work is finished.

The course is being remodelled, and extra land used. This is between the existing course and the motorway, so sweeps around the castle.

Have no doubt about it, if the land wasn't used for the golf course houses would be built, and that would make for a stunning view arouns the castle, don't you think?

This is a very small picture of the layout

At least its not houses.

I would prefer it not to be anything and left as land for people to walk on as I doubt the golf course will allow people to walk round the castle now.

Also how will they stop golf balls flying into the grounds of the castle?

I appreciate people like golf, but its hardly a game for the masses.

I'd rather it be a golf course than houses too... but whatever happened to just leaving good old nature spots as they are?
I agree that golf isn't a game for the masses, but let's face it... the land will at least still be green!

It's a public right of way to the castle, so they may have eto let us continue to walk uo there, It should be like the path by the existing greens I would have thought.

well as far as i know all public access that was there will still be available........ i.e public rights of way. as they have allways been.
but as for whinging about not being able to walk dogs all over the fields........ check your law pop80, public rights of way must be adhered to and not devaited from without prior permision of the land owner or you are trespasing.
i have no doubt everybody likes the area up there for walks etc, and obviously golf isnt everybodies cup of tea but come on a major investmant in the town keeping the area green and looking after the local wildlife? i think its a big bonus.
oh and as for sterio types, im not rich i have to work for a living and work even harder for the extra's like my membership. i have tatoo's, ride a motorcycle, listen to heavy metal and i certainly dont wear stupid clothes... oh and as for whacking a ball with a twig you will find most clubs are now made of steel and other more modern materials.

It isn't really any closer to the castle than it is now. Now I can hit the ball a long way, but to get it in the grounds is impossible!

Personally I cannot stand golf but when reading this thread I took exactly the same point of view as you, golf courses are invariably kept imaculate and reasonably natural, and are without doubt the preferred choice to houses. Can't see what all of the fuss is about golfers is either, each to their own. As long as that what you're happy spending your time/money on then who loses?

Gotta agree, at least its not houses! Anyone living up there gets a nice green area near them, rather than another estate. Whats the problem? To all intents and purposes surely nothing changes, as the land wasn't public anyway?

I presume that the footpahts down to Derrington will remain intact? I used to play in those fields as a child when visintg my grand parents in Derrington. In all fairness the path from the caslte to Derrington is quite a challenge on a bike in the winter, used to see how fast I could do it. Nearly came off into some barbed wire once, i reckon that would have hurt!

You'd be surprised the amount of objections we had from the residents bordering the course on the Newport Road size. I don't think they realised that the alternative was another estate, which would have knocked a considerable amount off the value of their property.

I think sometimes people like to object for the sake of it, to make themselves like they're doing something for the community, whether they've throught it through or not.

I have officially objected to the Burley Fields (possible) development.... I would love the opportunity of a golf course on there rather than houses!

I can understand objections to housing being built, especially since the government insists that a proportion of any new development is set aside for social housing, I mean they should at least tell you who they plan to house there. I'd definitely object if they said they were moving in Wayne and Waynetta Slob / Devvo / Vikki Pollard etc. in however not if it were for say the elderley or people with disabilities who cannot support themselves.
