tbh I took a while but we a few at work managed to figure out why its so hard to decipher. They obvisouly have just had the same horn passed down from generation to generation and now its started to wear out so much its inaudiable! :P we get loads of rag n bone men round here but not so many charity bags, ill agree when i was on wildwood though always got loads of the darn things but no rag n bone men when i lived there :o

I saw a new ( to me anyway ) scrap man in Weeping Cross today. He had a sign-written silver Transit pick-up and was playing the Steptoe theme tune - complete with intermittent cries of 'Arrold!!'.......

I know this thread is a little old, but we had 4 scrap metal vans in our road the other day (also wildwood), they all stopped and tried to have a good rifle through our skip but all they came up with was dried screed. Was most amusing watching them spending 10 mins looking and me knowing there was no metal in there.

Also our next door neighbour had only just moved in a few weeks ago and unfortunatley the previous tenant had left all his stuff in there (later found out he was in jail) and she left her or his washing machine out the front, scrappy turned up and took it without even trying her door.

There's a fine line between collecting "scrap" and having it away with anything thats not nailed down, and chances are with many houses empty during the day that line is being crossed more and more.

Oh my god this thread is hilarious, thanks guys, am literally laughing out loud, or lolling as we are supposed to say online. I'm glad its not just us who cant decipher the line after any old scrap iron.

I had noticed the ridiculous amount of clothing bags we've been getting through the door recently. We had three in day not so long ago. I know it's for a good cause but when you get them piling up by the front door or piling up in the recycling box in the kitchen it's a bit ridiculous. Are they trying to get in quick before the recycling of clothing starts?

I really can't stand the ragnbone men. They do seem to have made their visiting times a lot more sociable recently but we used to get woken at 8am on a Sunday by them and it used to make me so angry! I was looking at houses for sale about 18 months ago and we viewed a house that belonged to one of them. It was done out SOOO nicely inside. they'd spent a lot of money doing it up. Sadly it was in a really bad part of town so the price they were asking was a bit steep. But they obviously make a fair bit from it. Wasn't one of the "secret millionaires" from the TV show a ragnbone man? Or it was at least how he made his millions... It does concern me the way they see to go grab anything which seems discarded without even asking. I've heard of people's bikes being taken from their front gardens by them because they just assumed it was left for them. I would have gone out and shouted at them Dawn had it been my skip they were rifling through. It's just manners!

Vault_girl.....you were at mine the first time someone tried to take the washingmachine and they asked MrWar for a hand putting it on the van! I think it was after he had duct taped his uncle in the portaloo.

LOL, we are having a garage conversion at the moment and the builders brought their own portaloo which was on the front lawn. Mrwar's uncle is a very funny man and when mrwar and his brother were little they were always the victims of his pranks. Mrwars uncle is an electrician and was here doing the lights the other day and had to pop into the portaloo, seeing a chance for revenge Mrwar grabbed some duct tape and locked him in. Was quite funny and i do have a photo!

Excellent.

But you could have just shoved the bin in between the door and the skip, before going for lunch...
