World Cup 2014

4 Years ago I had a go at writing some England World Cup lyrics - Don't know why as I'm tone deaf and musically talent free (despite which I've never felt the urge and attempted to get on a TV Talent show).

The idea was generally that when we fail we can go back to playing a computer game version of the tournament and usually do better.
Anyway if anyone would like to hack it to bits and make something of it - I'd love to hear the results.

World Cup Reboot
It’s been a long time, since nineteen-sixty-six,
The dream ended in seventy, still looking for a fix,
Many years now, since Jules Rimet was held,
When will it be again, England rule the Football World,

Could it be this time, not four more years of pain,
New snippets of commentary, nationally ingrained,
Or will there be more heartbreak, as we fall along the way,
Turn once more for comfort, to that now vintage replay,
Now it’s time, yes it’s time -

For a World Cup Reboot,
Take the chances, go on shoot,
See the bulge, back of the net,
Make this a day, we won’t forget,

No complaints about decisions, or agonising injuries,
Keep the jubilation, no ‘it wasn’t meant to be’s’,
Team of skill & passion, bursting with National pride,
Conviction running through them, this time not to be denied,

At least in artificial realms, a manager without compare,
A record that’s not blighted, by decades of despair,
With all the skills required, not to pay the penalty,
But having lifted the trophy, return to reality,

Where it’s time, oh yes it’s time -
For a World Cup Reboot,
Take the chances, go on shoot,
See the bulge, back of the net,
Make this a day, we won’t forget,

Expectations growing,
Almost a sense of knowing,
That we can win,
As the tournament begins,
Pulling together a Nation as one,
Shoulder to shoulder as the anthem is sung,
We’ve kept on trying again and again,
This time we’re going to make amends,

Because it’s time, yes it’s time -
For a World Cup Reboot,
Take the chances, go on shoot,
See the bulge, back of the net,
Make this a day, we won’t forget – we won’t forget

and even if we fail,
in my own world we’ll succeed,
maybe not at first attempt,
instead of four years all I’ll need…

Is… -
a World Cup Reboot,
Take the chances, go on shoot,
See the bulge, back of the net,
Make this a day, we won’t forget – we won’t forget
World Cup Reboot,

Take the chances, go on shoot,
See the bulge, back of the net,
Make this a day, we won’t forget – no we won’t forget
World Cup Reboot…

Disappointing but not disheartening.

If that England plays, like that, against that Uruguay that played, like that, against Costa Rica, i would be quite confident of a win.

Feck alone knows how they would fare against that Costa Rican team.

Bridges crossed when got to, sort of thing, but...

-> next stop England 3 - Uruguay 0 -> cat amongst pigeons -> all depending on last games in group -> draw/undeserved win v. Costa Rica -> England 'sneak' into last 16.

Bring it all on. :)

Plus...

It is abundantly clear that in this game England were quite severely 'out-bearded' by the Italians.

It is imperative that the English team need more bearded players if they are to progress. Gerrard is doing his bit, though i'm not sure that 'designer stubble' cuts the mustard at this level. On current 'beard fitness' levels, i'm only seeing Lallana properly in form.

Obviously a razor ban must be immediately imposed.

Sort it out, Roy.

Agreed - There were quite a few positives last night.

The main problem seemed to be the shape of the team and picking the right players in the right position. I can understand the criticism of Rooney; whatever position you want to play him, there's usually someone better. Up front, then it's Sturridge; off the front player, then it's Sterling; wide left or right, but supporting the full back, then it's Milner.

The team lacks width (see how Sterling struggled in the 2nd half), so if this is to be provided by the full backs (no bad thing), then England need to play either a better holding player than Gerrard or a third centre back.

How's Oxlade-Chamberlain, BTW?

My Facebook was filled by people posting "Come on England" - is it really so difficult to put the comma in, or are they all closet Italians?

Isn't life grand?
Has their been a poor match yet? No drawn games. Only Greece and Cameroon failing to score. 31 goals in 9 games, double the amount at the same stage of South Africa 2010. Watch France v Hondures end up a nil nil snorefest!

Most goals per game since Sweden in '58.

And doesn't there seem to be a lot of teams winning having gone behind. Sadly, not England, though.

Honduras are the team to watch in this competition imo.

If you want to still have any legs left at the end of it, that is. :o

Still everything to play for but they'll have to play better against Uruguay (who'll have to raise their own game).

I don't agree with those that say we deserved to get something out the Italy game. Italy hit the Post, Bar and had a shot cleared off the line. We're going to have to defend much better in the next 2 games and stop surrendering the Midfield. Glen Johnson got a lot of criticism in the warm up games and did nothing to answer his critics Saturday night.

Blimey, did you see the Belgian N0.7's face? I don't think i've seen a face so red before.

At one point i was worried it was actually on fire.

Andy Townsend said:
One goal is never, NEVER, enough.
Commentating on 0ne of the games, i forget which.

In the interests of pursuing my death-wish upon Andy Townsend, i investigated this statement in light of the group stage of the 2010 World Cup.

I think we can all agree that the findings are quite illuminating.

Group Stage - South Africa – 2010

Mexico 0- 1 Uruguay
Argentina 1- 0 Nigeria

Algeria 0-1 Slovenia
Slovenia 0-1 England
United States 1-0 Algeria

Serbia 0-1 Ghana
Germany 0-1 Serbia
Ghana 0-1 Germany

Japan 1-0 Cameroon
Netherlands 1-0 Japan

Honduras 0-1 Chile
Spain 0-1 Switzerland
Chile 1-0 Switzerland

- from which i think it not unreasonable to infer that sometimes, SOMETIMES, one goal is, indeed, adequate.

i'm loving the games in the competition this time around. fantastic goal from Cahill yesterday. referee decisions have been just as poor tho.
Spain just looked so ordinary, as Brazil have. Apart from Holland looking great in their first game, Chile look competent. Belgium were my choice for the tournament (without looking at the way games are drawn after group stages).
I think before the tournament this time, England kept low key, with fans not expecting anything this time.
tonight the focus is on us playing Suarez, and wether Rooney starts in the middle.
I want the team to play to their best, give us pride rather than have to slag them off for not trying, not being fit, ready etc. if they do that and we lose, its not so bad.
we still want even tho we don't expect. come on England
