Until I was an adult I called it shepherds pie, as that's what my mother called it. One of the many ways she damaged me!
Trying to explain to my seven year old the differences between cottage and shepherds pie is hard, especially when he asks why there isn’t any pastry but it’s called a pie.
My recipe is actually for a ragu to be used in bolognaise but then I just cover it with mash. And if I added chilli to it and served with rice then we have another dish as well.
