I would imagine much of Carillion will be split up and sold, the new owners could end up doing the work ? unless the contracts have to go out to tender again.

After loads of meetings, largely the same blokes will end up doing the actual work, though probably in less favourable conditions, as even more suits will have to be paid for.

I live just off Junction 14 in Creswell and I'm not sure whether or not i'm glad it may be delayed. I can see it causing quite a bit of disruption but I also like the idea of them putting sound proofing barriers which I think was part of the proposed works.

They put in soundproofing barriers along a stretch past Penkridge when they upgraded it to smart motorway. Unfotunately they put them along the wrong stretch of road and the noise for much of the village is much worse now.

Holy Hell!

I went up to M6 J31 today, through the "Smart" Motorway construction north of Stoke. As much as I rant against the over-the-top Health & Safety mania of today, it struck me that I wouldn't want my name on the risk assessments for that lot.

Eighteen miles, with scores of diggers operating feet from passing traffic in a snowstorm. The potential for an errant arm, bucket or slung load to enter the path of the traffic seems rather high. Top marks to the blokes for every day they manage not to do it, but the scope for disaster is huge.

And, trying to get a fully laden eight-wheel tipper out into three lanes of nose-to-tail 50mph traffic from a standing start - uphill - is not something that I would want to do very often.

What always amazes me is why do they always have to restrict the full length of the works all the time. Why not cone 1-3 mile sections off, do all the work in that section and then move onwards to the next section? It would make for shorter roadworks and less frustration for the motorist at a minimum.

Or am I being naive in thinking it would benefit everyone?

What are the maths on this... What's the difference in doing the whole section at 50mph instead of 4-5miles at 50 then the rest at 70mph?

I really don’t know, cannot be arsed to try and figure it out and that isn’t the point I am making. It’s not the time taken, it’s the distruption caused.

I’ve been through those roadworks many times since they started and have seen quite a few very near misses because of how narrow the lanes are and how long the roadworks are.

Drivers can quite easily lose concentration when everyone is traveling at the same speed. I’ve had a lorry come within about 3 inches of my wing mirror when I’ve been in the outside lane. It’s bloody scary.

This is my biggest issue with these unending roadworks. The narrow lanes, the boredom of the 50 mph and the distance between j16 and 19 meaning it takes an age to get through them. How there hasn't been a major accident with many deaths is a mystery to me.
