People spend less because they have less money.
More tax means they will still spend the same (i.e. what they have), but will get less for it.
The Guv will earn more tax, but all consumers will be worse off. Companies will not be affected, as the vat is only payable on final sales IIRC?

Or they could declare all 'rights payments' made to non-UK companies as taxable at the VAT rate, and keep a few more billion in our own econemy each year rather than other peoples?

I Disagree that companies won't be affected - if the consumer is affected then clearly the company is, if the final price to the consumer is increased then demand will fall, resulting in lower sales and with the fragile state of many companies this could easily be the end of them you only have to look at the poor state of our High streets!

well been able to book a table in feb, doesn't mean anything of course but you'd think they'd prevent bookings. Here is hoping.

I'm pretty sure I have said this before, folk can obviously say what they want (within reason) but I don't think it is helpful or advisable to start speculating about businesses that may close in the future. It is a tough enough environment out there at the moment. Once the Xmas decs come down life in the New Year for many businesses, especially those in hospitality like The Post House will be very tough. If their bookings for this traditionally lean period take a further hit because people haven't booked on the back of idle gossip that the business won't be there then it could make the difference. Lets get out there & support our High St, our independant retailers, our pubs & bars. This is the best way to ensure that they survive. Use your High St or lose it. It is dead simple.

What a load of rubbish, I suggest people start supporting the independent businesses in the town, or the ones that pay UK tax! Just remember the like of The Post House has added a much needed quality gateway into our town, unfortunately so few others have actually managed to achieve this. Much talk in the town, but at least the Foster family have the credibility of actually doing what they set out to do.

I say go book a table and stop these disgusting rumours.

Chris is right, I have given up on Supermarkets and anything I can get is from the High Street.

I for one I'm looking foward to my traditional Christmas night out in Stafford with a stay at the Swan and a meal at the Post House and plenty of liquid around town. If this is a rumour it should always be posted with kid gloves and in such cases find out a little more before posting, not that I am having a go at Joshua.

Can't agree with you more, we should be rightly proud of our town centre and we need to support the business's.
We are fortunate to have a number of decent pubs and cafes, and the Post House development has been an excellent addition to the town. I would like to think the Post House has bought trade in from neighbouring areas and other business's have also benifited from extra trade.
The same can be said about supporting small shops and the market. Supermarkets might be convenient but better value and quality can be found around town.

Hello everyone. Thank you for your comments above. I have posted a thread in the Pubs and Eating out section which answers a few more questions.

The Post House is not shutting down in the New Year. In fact we are looking forward to another 365 days of opening.

The best way to put this is “Rumours are rumours because they are not true.”

We thank you greatly for your continued support.
