In Eastgate Street originally, apparently, then moved to St Mary's Gate..

.. you can just see his name over the car - if the eyes haven't gone..

How that area has been improved by the modernisation.

I can't place that at all in Stafford - anyone got an up to date streetview link?

Going forward, it might be better to have a new thread dedicated to a shop/establishment if it closes (in the same way that we have a new thread if a person of note passes, etc.), rather than lumping them all in here. This would make things less likely to be missed, and if it relates to a larger news story (e.g. the recent HMV closure) it prevents this thread from losing focus, and encourages debate about that specific closure.

I won't close this thread, as it is still important and could be used for discussion of how closures affect Stafford in general.

Thanks. :)

That part of the Guildhall is going for a song, actually i don't think i'm using the term correctly, was almost trying to be clever.
...that part of town is looking a little drab now.

I hope (never going to happen) that the council reinstate that end of the Guildhall to how it looked pre 00's, i haven't pictures from the late 90s but from what i remember, it was nice and quaint, you could walk upstairs without battling through sports goods!

There was a mezzanine, there was a coffee shop, a fountain even, is that right? any oldies remember?

As for HMV, such a shame but if you don't put on the armour for battle, you'll die in vain.

In what way is the Council responsible for renovating and improving a shopping centre owned by a private company - who do not care about it being "nice" but increasing profit and removing trouble from their premises.

I must admit, I really like the one thread. Don't know about others, but it's great to subscribe to the one thread and get all the latest news about outgoings (and incomings on the other thread).

as for one thread - I really like that too - lots of threads would seem very depressing indeed, and you know if this thread has a new post in it something else has happened...

Indeed, and I can certainly see the value in it, hence the decision to leave this thread open to continue the discussion (as opposed to the News megathread, and Deaths megathread, which were closed).

I just think that important news stories, and related comments and discussion, get missed by casual browsers if they are buried in here!

the council can do anything they please, with the right team behind them they can do anything, sell aswell as buy back what was ours to begin with, loopholes exist for those that want to use them, simple as that, that's all.

There was a water feature just beyond the 'main crossroads'. My understanding is that it was removed to avoid the risk ( and the ongoing expense of countering the risk ) of legionella contamination.

I often wondered why nobody ever put a few squirts of Fairy Liquid in it..?

How long ago you thinking of?Down that little alley was a record shop called Lotus records years ago
I think it was where game was I was a visitor to the town at that point and not resident, we both worked for our price and then the store in telford became virgin, I think that it was virgin in town but it may still have been an our price, ostensibly towards the end, the same company.

Ah, 'twas an Our Price, I think.

I think it was Our Price where Game is. I don't think we have ever had a Virgin* in the town.

*Virgin Records that is :P

Our Price did turn to Virgin for a short time or whatever they called the shop - V maybe? I remember because it was when they were just getting into their mobile selling too and they had half a dozen phones at the front of the shop.
