Castletown Parking

As an ex-Castletown resident myself, Id gladly pay it & have the scheme. It was never so bad in the evenings, in fact a lot better than a lot of areas such as up by Marston Rd/Peel Terrace, which leads me to believe quite a few Castletown residents must not own cars. But in the day it stopped you going out in the car, as if you left a space you couldnt get one back.

However I can see peoples points that adding up all the households, what is all the money paying for. Its already patrolled daily by traffic wardens so what other costs are there, other than issuing passes, running a database (which Im sure the residents association would be happy to maintain if asked) & putting signs up. It seems like somebody must be making a profit out of the scheme. & that wasnt the idea.
I sympathise, and know it's a pain not being able to park your car as and when you want, but I dare say the majority of residents bought their houses, or became tenants, knowing full well that there was no parking provided. So, either pay the £45 if you want an improved situation over that when you moved in, or don't pay and don't park!

It's like people who move into a house next to an airfield then a few years later start complaining about the noise the aircraft make - it was there before you were!

Oops - pound per day per year
Not quite right still! Less than £1 per week. It's just over 12p per day! I challenge somebody to find car parking for less than 12p per day.

While i see Mr X's 'less than a pound a day' point
You're quite right of course, i wonder how it compares to other similar schemes?

That may seem excessive, yes, but I assume that the correct number of spaces will be marked (requiring painting), otherwise as ddub points out, there's going to be frustrated residents? A considerable number of signs will also need to be made, and fitted too. As for the rest, who knows?!

It will be interesting to see if the unofficial spaces are removed too, as they presumably couldn't be made into official bays (eg here), and spaces will be lost on railway street where cars currently restrict the width of the road dangerously. Quite where the 166 spaces go I don't know, although they ought the be able to fit more on Castle Street now that there's no HGV traffic to Castle Works so very little chance of two needing to pass half way

Liverpool - free
Manchester - free
Lincoln - £26 first permit, £52 additional permits (if available)
Worcester - £30
Stoke-on-Trent £70 joining fee, £18 per year
Ludlow - £50

So, varies quite a lot it seems!

A lot of resident parking schemes issue more permits than spaces, as it is rare that all residents cars are all there at the same time.

For those out there who think "tough luck, you chose to live there..etc", what do you think of the new system now being imposed and the fact that there's a whole line of taxis impeding you as you drive along Railway Street as well as inconsiderate sorts who dump themselves outside the Mercedes garage for pick ups from the station every team time? I find it quite ironic that residents get hammered with tickets and fines while these others just go about their business? Never see a warden round there at that time of day do you.......................

And also the above remark..."you chose to live there, put up with it" - very inconsiderate as there's a lot of long term residents round here. I can remember being able to play games in the street and moving over when the cars and bikes flooded through from Castle Works at knocking off time.

Lets see how the commuters and those with a lack of common decency put up with the new rules. A tenner says some will turn up and carry on without looking at a notice as its what they've always took for granted!

Im off up Riverway to part with my hard earned in a bit........

Pick up and drop off is absolute choas at the station. You can park for 20 minutes free in the carpark but I don't think many people realise this. The taxi rank is too small. They would be better to dedicate the railway street car park for taxis and short stay but people would still park all over the place.

Interesting that now the scheme is in full swing that
1. Admittedly I haven't been at home a lot during the working week but when I have I haven't seen a warden yet
2. How empty some streets are, proving that the area had become a "dump and ride" area for commuters etc
3. Its pretty obvious there is a number of residents and temporary residents who have not taken on permits and either leave their vehicles elsewhere or take a chance and get home and park in the street from any time past 4 - 4.30.

Leaves you sort of miffed when you abide by the rules and you don't see a number of others give a hoot!

I've just picked Andreas up in Jerningham Street and moved off sharpish when I spotted one approaching in the rear-view mirror.

This event occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. today, should you wish to record it.

Trouble attracts trouble! ;)

Thanks for that! Dad then informs me that he's seen some even though he hasn't been out. Seem to appear when nurses arrive in the street! I'llcheck the next residents meeting minutes and try and get to a meeting to see if theres any feedback.

We did then go and remove some valuable goods from an old lady's house, so you're probably not too far off the truth!

I don't recall this parking scheme in any manifestos at local election time......

Pretty sure Labour & Lib Dems did so as Maureen Compton put some work in and Chris Barron & David Seary also did a lot of chasing as well, of course, as Mr Tom! Ironically, I don't appear to have read any Tory info so I'm not too sure on that front and their headquarters is in........Castletown.

Tom Harris is a community and transport campaigner, known for reviving the
Castletown Residents’ Association and working for a free and fair parking
scheme for the area.
On the other hand...
Tom and Lisa have
long been working on getting a free
residents’ parking scheme in
Castletown. “These are our streets.
People should not have to pay to park outside their own homes."

I remember Chris Barron and David Seary campaigning many years ago for this scheme. Maureen Compton campaigned when she was a county councillor and got it started again. Tom Harris caused problems because he wanted a scheme which would be free and this just wasn't going to happen. Can't remember the tories doing anything about this issue.

Tom caused problems because.........? If that accusation is to be levelled at anybody it can be used for anybody who had to join one! Who would want to pay what we have? Tom purely tried to fight people's corner as has anybody else who tried.
