Cycle theft

Met my friend in town today, she has had her quality Specialised mountain bike stolen from the bike racks outside Cafe Nero so was staking out the bikes and racks in town to see if she could spot her bike or any thieves around.

Anyways, during the process of dealing with the police and doing all the reports it's transpired that Stafford is undergoing an epidemic of cycle theft, mainly down to a few junkies. The police know who is doing it but haven't managed to catch them in the act or with the evidence. She has posted her bike pics on Stafford Car Boot FB page where the scale of the issue is obvious :(

So, if you do lock your bike up in town it might be wise to double lock or even treble lock your prized possession. Just a brief scan of the bikes locked up outside the old Post Office today showed that people seem to be happy to invest hundreds of pounds in a bike but then lock it up with a lock from Poundland!!

Some good locks and advice here:

That response from the police, if accurately reported, does sound like the most utter baloney. If I were Kyoto's mate, I'd be writing letters to the chief constable and the police authority and asking why more - or any - effort isn't being put into stopping the allegedly well-known perpetrators of an 'epidemic' of bike theft.

Its the same with burglary. I heard on the radio the other day that to save money they will only go out the burglaries if the house number ends with an odd number. They wont come out to car break-ins either.

Oh right. Only caught the part where they had some top brass on talking about it, i thought it was everywhere.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Maybe it is, or will be......
I expect so. Modern policing is all about surfing the net on 'company' ipads, eating doughnuts and getting paid overtime by manning Safety Camera Partnership vans. In other words getting their priorities right.

errr...

I don't actually think we have a Chief Constable or a Police Authority

Ce soir, they were in Tesco's. Surprisingly, the big one, not the Express up the Stone Road which is where I usually spot them. And manifestly not fighting crime, just shopping.

Still, I expect it was doughnuts, or tonight's well-earned evening nosh, so what's my problem?

A friend of mine had their mountain bike stolen from Mill Street. Value £1000.
And yes, it is the same people nicking them.
And yes, it is the same person buying them from the addicts for resale.

What kind of locks did they have on the bike out of interest? I'm wondering if there are types of locks the thieves are targetting?

Like I said before, and I'm not accusing your friend here, but the number of expensive bikes in town locked up with a cheap nasty lock is pretty astonishing. One wonders why the owners bother with a lock at all, they might as well put a sign on their bike saying "steal me now!"

Why should the police staff not be allowed to go in to shops when on a break? Do you feel the same about council workers who shop for food while on their dinner?
