Just a note on the recurring theme that discrimination based on religion is "not racism" - it is. The Institute of Race Relations should be a reasonable source on this I would hope - their definitions are at http://www.irr.org.uk/research/statistics/definitions/

A couple from the page:

Institute of Race Relations said:
Anti-Muslim racism – Legislation or actions which, though not always or necessarily directed against the Muslim religion, effectively discriminate against people from Muslim communities

Institute of Race Relations said:
Racism – the belief or ideology that ‘races’ have distinctive characteristics which gives some superiority over others. Also refers to discriminatory and abusive behaviour based on such a belief or ideology. In the UK, denying people access to good and services on the basis of their colour, nationality, ethnicity, religion etc is illegal and called racial discrimination. Institutional racism (a term coined by US Black Power leader Stokely Carmichael) occurs when a whole organisation’s procedures and policies disadvantage BME people. State racism refers to the way that racism can be enshrined in laws (such as immigration legislation), in procedures (such as police stops and searches) and programmes (such as those on political extremism)

I would say religious. There are about 200,000 people in the UK who adhere/relate to the jewish faith but I would imagine the vast majority would say they are British and white.
The same goes for other groups of people. I am British, white and a (weddings, christenings, funerals etc) Christian. What is my race?

henrycat, I'm sure you can find all sorts of different definitions from all sorts of different sources.

If you are to look at Section 9 of the Equality Act 2010 they define race as:

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/section/9

Religion is covered separately in section 10 of the same act.
Indeed you can, but I would still maintain that the IRR is a reasonable source to refer to in this instance.
Separation in legislation does not mean they are two separate things. For instance, the Equality Act acknowledges that race includes "ethnic origins". Ethnicity can be taken as referring to a common heritage, that heritage includes a common culture, part of which can be religion. I don't think the Equality Act is particularly inconsistent with the IRR.

Let's try this one then. Would criticizing any doctrine of the Catholic church, such as objecting to birth control, be classed as racism?

Probably not. Indeed, I suspect that halal is only allowable here because we couldn't ban it without also banning kosher, and we don't want to do that. Might not be true, but I think it probably is.

Surely the whole situation could be sorted out by simply branding affected meat in three categories. 1) Kosher, 2)Halal, 3)Non Religious.

How could that offend anyone?

Either that or people could just accept that it all tastes the same and get on and eat it.

What if it is half halal? They could say a prayer as it goes through the machine in a kind of updating of the texts to reflect modern practices kinda thing. Or what if its throat was slit by a person but they said no prayer? Or the wrong prayer, is that worse, I never could grasp these things? Maybe you should have a series of traffic light style affairs where you get lights for stun, prayer and death?

It was a Number 42 last time I was in.

Actually best be careful, I can already hear the tap tap tap of righteous indignation and offence - taken on people's keyboards.

If I prefer to buy my pizza from a pizzeria and not a supermarket, am I racist?

...or prefer Pizza Express over Pizza Hut and Dominos, am I racist then?

Just so "everyone" knows where I stand on the matter, I love all pizza!!
