Electric cars.

Powercuts would never be that long lasting to cause such problems impo.

Always take what you hear in the media with a pinch of salt*

*as long as that pinch of salt doesn't cause heart failure, as the media would have you believe.

Been having a look at electric cars but not convinced they would actually be any cheaper to run. They cost so much more to actually buy. If you do low milage then you could buy a lot of petrol with the difference in cost.

There has been some very cheap deals floating about on HUKD for an electric car, think it was a Nissan Leaf.

Looks aside, I think the car was about £12k or £13k which seems very cheap given the likely fuel cost savings. Only fly in the ointment is that the cost above is sans battery and I believe its £70 a month to lease the battery.

You can get a charging point installed for free because a government initiative, you don't even need an electric car to apply you can just get one for a laugh. The cynical person in me suspects Call Me Dave's mate owns a charging point installation firm.

Hi

An extra worry is that you have a major and expensive consumable item that the vehicle is 100% dependent on. What happens when the battery is no longer available? If Nissan decide in a decade that the Leafs battery is no longer economically viable to supply you could easily land up with a car sat on the drive which is utterly useless other than as scrap, while the cost of buying a replacement non OE battery would be completely non viable for an older car.

Supply it with an insured guarantee that the battery will be available for the life of the car (however many decades that may be) and it might just be viable.

All the best

I'm sure that it will happen - e.g., I hardly ever plug in a mains drill nowadays, a cordless one will do most things.

Perhaps, if Apple could be persuaded to produce an iCar, then all the early adopter types would pile the money in..?

The Chinese appear to be becoming concerned about their pollution levels, at last, and they are probably our best hope in this area.

I think they're all lithium-ion now.

The only kind of electric car that makes sense is the range extenders like the Ampera or the Outlander where you can run around on batteries for the day to day stuff but have the petrol engine ready to keep the batteries topped up when you decide to drive further afield or abroad on holiday.

Looking at the Outlander, it seems quite a compelling choice for the kind of driving I do and once the government grant enters the equation it's actually a bit cheaper than the fuel guzzling competition. Might have to pay a visit to Brindley in Cannock at some point.

I'd be tempted by an electric motorbike for the short rides I do, but TBH its not worth it for me as I've not needed the petrol one in 2 years!

Did I misread that, only 30 miles on electric?!?!?! Hardly worth having IMHO, wouldn't even get me to Stoke and back*..... How long does it take to charge for those 30 miles?

* I realise with the additional petrol engine it would get me to Stoke and back, but I mean purely on electric....

Today, I saw a Nissan Leaf in use as a taxi.

I didn't unfortunately, get the opportunity to interrogate the driver.

It was being rammed full of a couple's bulky shopping, with an attempt to leave space for one of them in the back.

We had a ride around Lytham St Annes in the hotels new electric car they were showing off a couple of years ago. They had a charging point on the wall on the carpark for any guests arriving by electric car...., but it was always blocked off and hidden by all the other cars anyway !

I would worry about actually being able to find a charging point, and then it being available to use and not occupied by another vehicle at the same time as I rolled up..

Saw an electric car on display outside the BMW place yesterday.
