Bugger all proven.
The Beatles are overrated.
What I feel people tend to forget is that while the beatles were around there music was forward of the times but also people were smashed on magic mushrooms etc, nirvana again ahead of there time an people smashed of there face listening to them. it is a case of each to there own the beatles now are an example of old school rock or classic sixties kind of thing where as in the 70 it would of been even better, yet they formed in 58 i think maybe wrong could of been earlier with the silver beatles thingy.
58' is about right.
What still amazes me is how it evovled from 'Love me Do' in 1962 to 'Helter Skelter' in just 4 or 5 years. 200 tunes with only about a dozen klunkers is pretty good going too.
'Revolver' was recorded when Abbey Road would only allow tea to be served in a cup and saucer in the studio and if you wanted to move a bass drum mic you had to get permission off the white coated studio manager.
I think you have a fanciful idea of what people were up to in the 60's and 70's. We were not all off our faces on drugs and drink. I doubt the bands were either - most of that came post career with a few notable exceptions (Moon?Keef?).
Nirvana - ahead of their time? where does that leave the Pistols, Damned, Clash et al? Where are the movies, documentaries, books and news items about Kurt Cobain? They were interesting and of their time but hardly changed things. Americas take on punk 15 years too late.
I have a problem with terms like "Old school" - surely there is just rock? Where is the New School?
Kings of Leon? REM?Radiohead?Pistols?Take That?
To broaden it all out a bit I think younger posters of the ipod generation would be amazed how much rock played in peoples lives in the Seventies and eighties. Probably more coffe shops than record shops in most towns now.
£200 tickets, Flowered wellies and watching twenty past their best millionaires in a field is not rock and roll is it?
Until you've stood under a shower of phlegm, offal, fireworks and bottles at a UK Subs gig you haven't lived.
