Flash Mob!

I think it would need to be something that other people could join in with such as a group hug, a spontaneous round of applause or a giant ring of people doing the hokey cokey.

Ideas that would need a lot more planning include a giant picnic, creating a human chess board, we would need 64 black and white squares and people could be the pieces or my favourite and piggybacking on gota quid’s fab idea – surrounding the bible preacher guy and producing devil horns while chanting satan, satan satan – maybe not the best time to promote the forum though!!
Group hug would probably be the easiest and I like the idea of a spontaneous round of applause or all looking into the sky because it'd be interesting to see how many people not involved in the mob just started randomly clapping with us :D

I think the devil horns around the preacher might not be seen in the brightest light.. plus i think it has to be something simple that everyone can do with little planning.

I'd say pillow fight is probably still top of my list cause it's easy and fun :)

Still liking the idea of someone in a badger suit running through town though.. You'd see 100's of people running away from something through town, then see a giant badger chasing them. We could start running from the post office at the end of town, up to cafe nero at the other end of town, then disperse randomly. :D

I first came across Flash Mobs as a campaigning thing (trying to put across anti globalisation messages at G8 type things because they managed to avoid the usual police problems) so shouldn't we be trying to say more than 'look at us!' - how about 'We need a decent live music venue!'

So how about anyone with a guitar (or other musical instrument I guess) brings it along and at the same moment starts playing their favorite tune whilst everyone else holds up signs saying "Wot no venue" or some such. We could make a real cacophony of disharmony - an organised musical chaos if you will.

I think a problem with that sort of idea is it's not spontaneous enough because everyone would have to walk to town, carrying their instruments. Plus wouldn't you end up with a wall of noise, but the bad kind?

I like your use of 'cacophony of disharmony' though, nice ring to it, have a skill point! :D

i definitely do not think this should become a political thing, or have any kind of agenda whatsoever.. the whole point of it is to cuase confusion and disbelief - if we had banners or some kind of ulterior motive it wouldn't be a flash mob, it would just be a picket..

I concur

Any more ideas for random, confusion-causing flash mobs are welcome :)

I read about a flash mob in a train station - a 'flash rave'. Everyone dances to songs on their ipods (so no sound is actually made) for a while and then walk off.

if we's gonna do it, maybie we should let the professionals know. It could make the diference between a mob, and half a dozen embarrassed looneys.

(loving the 'flee the badger' idea)

i like the silent dancing idea, and if someone could definitely get hold of a badger suit.. that would be cool to do :) When would be a good time to try something like this? I'd say in the summer holidays cause you'd get even more people in town. :D

woah, talk about coincidence - i just checked out sheffieldforum.com to see if this godforsaken city had anything interesting to report, and sure enough there's a thread there, posted today, about flash mobbing!

rather than repeat it here verbatim, why don't y'all just check it out to get some ideas:

Right this has beenquiet for a while - lets nor slip into the usual apathy - Forunittes are above that!

We need to do this!

Lets keep it simple. I'm a big fan of Antony Gormley and I was thinking about his statues up on that beachthat just stare out to sea. They look amazing. Amnd then I was thinking about x-files and stuff...

...so how about just going into bttf Square and at say 12:21 eveyone stands to attention staring at the clock for 2 minutes then stop and carry on. It would be like sone strange force had taken over. We could probably get agrant from Culturegen if we called it art!

Lord Sofa Almighty masks are a great idea and an impromptu rendition of the Stafford Song at the 'bttf Square 5 minute Festival' - with g2s as his Badger disciple! :)

A friend of mine did a Flash Mob where about 100 mobsters went into a big Tescos each bought a pack of chewing gum and tied up their tills for ages! ;)

Anyways, count me in anytime.

How many people do you realistically think we can get for this? Cause it'd have to be a good amount otherwise the usual Saturday town-walkers wouldn't notice anything untoward going on. :P

Just two of you stand in the middle of the market square and look up at the sky...pointing and then a few others join, and a few others......till a group appears, checkout how many other people star tlooking up.....i've tried this in Brum when I get board....it always works....if someone asks what we are looking at just say..."Can't you see it?" and then I think we should just all point to the sky in a kind of close encounters of the third kind styley......sounds good to me!!! :D
