The catchment areas for schools are messed up any way. When my kids were looking to go to high school we were told that we are in the catchment area for Rising Brook, despite living 5 mins walk away from King Eddies.

i think road capacity could be improved in Stafford if all the traffic lights were linked together and the timings automatically changed based on current traffic levels

Maybe if there wasn't a prescribed demand to build 10,000 houses or so within a ten year plan then road improvements wouldn't get overwhelmed.

Allegedly, they are. When I toured the Highways Dept at Riverway, I was shown the system and controls for all of the traffic signals. I can think of plenty of instances however, when the controls aren't being used effectively.

I knew somebody twenty years ago who was employed largely to ensure the interlinking of the traffic light system - it wasn't too bad in those days, maybe all the additional lights have buggered up the system, or they just forgot about it when she left...?

A classic example is the left filter lane from Beaconside into Sandon Road - you are required to sit there pointlessly whilst the traffic exits Sandon Road, even though there is a full lane of traffic and a filter light available with no possibility of conflict, the sequence does not light it green until the straight-ahead lights change anyway - puerile.

When the 'gyratories' were installed in the 1970s all the roads had traffic lights stopping vehicles for no reason. So they took some of them away, then about twenty years later put them back. Maybe now't the time to remove all the lights except pedestrian crossings and have ordinary roundabouts?

Another way of improving roads would be to have very low urban speed limits of 15-20mph. Obviously it would initially drive people mad, but after a while they'd start to realise that cycling or walking was as fast and much safer. An additional benefit would be in improving health, which would save £millions. Who knows, they might even be enough money to keep the hospital open?

The lights weren't working for quite a period at the start and all was well - then they got turned on.

Reduce the number of right turns, except at a few key junctions, remove most of the traffic lights and watch the traffic flow improve.
Simples.

As ever with a lit of threads, a few post have got me a bit off tack. However, I have not read every word if this thread but find it interesting certain points have not been talked about much - The fact that the road not only skirts the marshes thus effecting wildlife and conservation, but that is what it is because it is part of the town's natural flood plain and still floods. This will become the first main road in the town that will flood regularly or at least be in danger of being restricted.
There is mention of restricting access on some existing roads but that hasn't been talked of much. I also wonder if Halfords will be persuaded to move to another location? Can't see that junction being enlarged and keeping that store there?

Did you miss the bit about the road being on a 40ft viaduct?

40ft? I assume that's the length not height!

No, the road will rise majestically from the marshes and go straight over Sainsburys. The council anticipate it being a major tourist attraction and will put up toll gates at either end, manned by retired fleamasons.

I have to see the plans on this, but is there some sort of power grid at the back of lidl and megabowl? Halfords is mentioned surely a building would have to go?

I thought Halfords were off to the Morrisons site......

Hi

Looking at the plan I am a bit dubious about the junction that will be installed coming from Doxey on the universal site. On the plans it looks a bit close to the bridge (which is being rebuilt). Going from Doxey towards the A518 would mean turning right there. To be safe it would need traffic lights which would probably make a mess of the traffic flow. Not sure those who have bought the newly built houses around there will appreciate the embankments being proposed.

Can't see how it will work around Halfords without taking half its car park (on top of yhe bowling alley losing much of its car park). Possibly better to do the job properly and run up the old railway line and connect somewhere onto the Eccleshall road. Otherwise we will just land up waiting for another road to cure the problems caused by a poor attempt this time round.

All the best

Keith
