Have you seen Jeremy Lefroy in Stafford?

Publicity stunt no more no less. He should be in Stafford in the Square this Saturday and face students. He should explain why the government is cutting spending!

In a strange way, it actually seems to 'look worse' than not doing it. He's paying the money to Staffordshire University, but I can't find out if he went there or somewhere else..

Eventually - the Telegraph says that he went to King's College, Cambridge. Should he not be paying them? Who would he pay if he didn't have a University in his constituency?

Also noticed he seems to have been a coffee trader? fair trade I hope. No wonder he is trying for one of theses overseas aid jobs, needs to check the harvest.

Whoever is 'advising' him must be a half-wit. Assuming he has an adviser...

I don't really know much about him, but he does come across as a 'Tim, nice but dim' type...

Show us the money. If I was the VC of Stafford Uni I would tell him to fook off. How can you have anything to do with somebody from a party who has decimated your budget!

I suspect that payments to the VC will not be decimated.

Enjoying a drop of red.

Ludicrous and idiotic.

And awfully patronising.
Indeed. He's also demonstrating that he has plenty of money to splash around unlike many of his constituents.

Jeremy you really need an advisor, and if you already have one sack them and get one that knows what they're doing, as publicity seeking, empty gestures like this aren't going to get you re-elected.

If you must splash out the cash then give it to a local charity that can do some good for local people like Katherine House Hospice.

He voted FOR the raises, who cares what empty token fookin gesture he makes? He wants students to pay more, and he wants to make it all OK by paying for his now he's in a nice tax money funded job. Probably put it on expenses anyway!

Would you be happier with an in your face publicist MP?

Or is it just knock the new boy at every opportunity time?

Lets face facts he was first choice in Stafford - by a mile

The fact is he has tried to be a publicist and failed spectacularly - what he proposes to do makes literally no sense at all and merely makes him look like an idiot.

I wouldn't knock him if he did nothing worth knocking but this takes the biscuit.

I admit i didn't vote for him but accept the will of the people of Stafford.

Can't see it on his website, I can see him saying 'Proper Public Inquiry still needed into Hospital' but that was before he was in power and would have to deal with it. TBH that website seems to have been made after the election, although news stories go back to 2006 or so. You can see his revised pledges on it though:

Election Pledges
Before the General Election I set out my pledges for Stafford constituency. Having the honour of being elected Stafford’s MP, this is the work which I would concentrate on:

TACKLE LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT, SUPPORT BUSINESS AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISE.
I will work to help bring jobs, businesses and social enterprises to Stafford constituency and to improve availability of finance for them. I will encourage as many employers as possible to offer apprenticeships.

SUPPORT THOSE WORKING TO RESTORE PUBLIC CONFIDENCE IN STAFFORD HOSPITAL.
I will support management and staff as they work on improving the hospital. I will keep a close eye on the hospital finances and lobby government to ensure it receives proper funding. A Conservative government will hold a full independent public inquiry to learn the lessons of our hospital’s problems for the whole NHS.

FAIRER FUNDING FOR STAFFORDSHIRE’S SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES
I will continue to fight for fairer funding for Staffordshire’s schools and colleges. Our schools currently receive more than £300 below the average for England. I will encourage the highest standards in education for our young people.

SUPPORT OUR ARMED FORCES AND THE DEVELOPMENT AT MoD STAFFORD
I will support our armed forces and veterans and work to ensure that the move of 1st Signals Brigade to Stafford happens as soon as possible.

IMPROVE SUPPORT FOR CARERS
The unsung work of carers is vital. So I will work with the County Council and local health services to improve support for carers, especially more respite places.

TACKLE STAFFORD’S CONGESTION AND IMPROVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Traffic congestion threatens future investment and quality of life. I will work with the County Council, Borough Council and transport bodies to tackle congestion blackspots. I will also work on improving public transport links in Stafford, Penkridge and rural areas.

However much you earn (and it's EARN because you've WORKED to get there) giving that amount of money is a considerable amount to anyone - it is a considerable donation to hand over, he didn't have to, he didn't need to, but he's earned money and is giving something which i'm sure they can find good use for the money he's pledged. As for those suggesting the country should keep on spending, look what got us in this mess, Labour's irresponsible spending!

OK, lets make his generous pledge applicable to the masses. Nobody pays a penny for their education until they earn the same as an MP, at which point they have to pay it all back.

Under current plans you would still be failing to pay the interest on the student loan if you were paid £45k, assuming a constant RPI figure and a debt of £45k (which is 3.5 years at 9k and £65pw accommodation, we'll pretend you didn't eat or need clothes or books or anything).
