ok, because of this thread i google "stafford" from time to time, to see if this place ever actually appears in the results.. and, frankly, it doesn't seem to have helped at all..

double-you tee eff? i've just waded through 37 pages of results and we don't appear anywhere.. there are some really weird sites that do show up, when clearly we are more deserving.. what's the beef?

edit: just found us! on page 46 of the results.. i notice there are new "remove" and "promote" links next to google results.. what do these do? will it help if we all click "promote"?

edit 2: ah right:

apparently the promote/remove links only affect your local google settings; they have no bearing on the actual page rank.. so basically, don't click them - certainly not for the forum, anyway..

Here you can find a list of all the inbound links for this site. Inbound links are a large factor in Google’s ranking algorithm. Anchor text for inbound links plays a part too. Unfortunately Bob there is no silver bullet with SEO. If it were that easy to manipulate Google they probably wouldn't have gone from a garage business to a globally recognised brand in under 10 years. That being said they can be manipulated (I regularly make them my bitch :P). PM me and I’ll offer any assistance I can.

apparently, google ranks a page higher based on a keyword if people actually click a link after searching for that keyword, which makes sense.. so if you google "snowman" and then click a link to a page about snowmen, google will remember that that was the site you were looking for and will associate your snowman site with the keyword "snowman"..

so, i've got an idea.. can everyone (yes, even you) please do the following?

1) go to www.google.com
2) type stafford in the search box and click "search"
3) scroll to the bottom of the page and click on page 46
4) find the link for Stafford Forum towards the bottom and click it!

if everone does this, then google will start to think "wait a minute, all these people are searching for "stafford" then clicking on this one link - i better move it up a notch!".. well, that's the theory, anyway :D:up:

interesting, thanks.. i'm not trying to scam them, as such (and neither should anyone else or we'll get removed altogether!) - i just am confused as to how there are so many sites that appear before us in the rankings, when you would think google recognises we are at least some way relevant to "stafford" lol

Yeah Google's new search wiki. Only effects you if you are logged into your google account.

Interesting here though... people are forever complaining about companies out sourcing work to india etc. Google have just pulled off a massive blag right under our noses! Their 'don't be evil' moto is twoddle, they had use to employ 1000's of site reviewers who would manually check the serps and rate sites. A large number of these people have just been sacked. Google has out sourced their job to YOU!

Don't be evil my arse

If that works, then it's a good idea, and it would be great if everyone could have a go :)

Note that your instructions aren't 100% accurate, though. When you search for the word "stafford," and scroll to the bottom of the results, it only gives you links for pages 1 to 10. So to get to page 46, you should click the link to page 10, then page 19, then page 28, and so on until you get to the desired page!

It's a bit of a palaver, but if everyone wouldn't mind doing it we could see if it has any effect. Why not use this method to find The Forum every day, instead of just typing the URL in the address bar or googling "Stafford Forum"? A few extra minutes, sure, but it's all in the name of a good cause :D

Just done the above and it is no longer on page 46..... has it had an effect already?

Can't be arsed to look through all those pages so if someone can let me know what page its on now, i'll try again.

i hope so, but i doubt it! i've just checked and it's defo on page 46 for me.. it's it possible to customise google search? e.g. change the number of results per page, etc? if so, i wonder if you have done that?

Not wanting to be a buzz kill here but that really won’t do anything.

The sheer volume of search required to affect G in this way is out of the question to any1 without a botnet so large it will one day turn into SkyNet and dominate the human race.

Plus I’d be aiming for .co.uk if I were you. G likes to use its geo targeting occasionally and when they switch it on any searcher typing google.com into the address bar is redirected to their countries G (i.e. Google.co.uk). They don't always have it on but is worth taking note of.

I am going to leave all this alone now cus i think i'm comming across as a bit of a thinks he knows it all wanker.
Which is what I am, and I do, but still - no more from me!

There are allot of things you could do to this site to make G see it for the master piece it is. Too many to put in one thread... and i'm not writting it all out :P

You might want to have a word with the Admin and get him to amend the .htaccess file on the web root of the server. Make it so the all non www pages are 301-redirected to their www counterparts. The kind of redirect (301) is important. Example: http://staffordforum.com and http://www.staffordforum.com are the same page. We know that but G isn't so clever. It will be spreading the page equity between the two versions of that page. We want them adding together so two becomes one and our page Double Teams Google in the face.

That is not the best example but you get the idea. If you're not comfortable editing the .htaccess file you can now do this non www to www in Google webmaster tools as well, but in my experience this is less beneficial in the SERPs and the fewer decisions you let Google make for you the better.

This is just one little thing but it could mean your link joooos is a little more concentrated and that extra link-love might give you a push you the right direction.

But like I said man no silver bullet with this stuff. There are literally hundreds of things I would suggest.

Now my e-penis grows flaccid with all this talk of SEO and Google jiggery pokery!

ah, this is excellent knowledge! i was just about to post about the fact that a lot of people seem to be linking to staffordforum.com instead of www.staffordforum.com, which is a pain.. what you're describing seems to be a way to fix this..
