House prices - what is wrong with this place?

Isn't that largely because when it was 1½ times basic salary the great majority of income was spent on necessities whereas now it's four or five times basic salary the expectation is for half the income to be spent on what would have been considered luxuries such as more than one holiday a year and eating out regularly ?
Or have I got that the wrong way round ?
Nah, it's avocados that are the problem apparently. Everyone could easily afford a house if they ate less avocados, so it's self inflicted.

On a more serious note the average UK salary is 28k, thats under 2k a month take home. Looking at current rent and house costs that doesn't leave much, and bills like council tax and electricity/gas are pretty essential.
