If I'd just shafted you I'd also tell you not to worry and that you'll get your money, but I'm not a twat so wouldn't have done this to start with.

Just read this on their Facebook page (it's a reply to someone's post about how staff were treated, so won't be immediately visible) ...

Sarah Shillabeer Very sympathetic and supportive staff you had Lowndes Fruit n Veg.
They can get another job ,you have ALL the work of winding up a business and deal with all the emotional impact of finishing a business that is deeply rooted in your family history.
Long live the brave entrepreneurs of this world who have the guts and drive to employ the people of Stafford.

Anyone care to put her in the picture?

Must be a friend of the lowndes. She should try saying that to the faces of all the staff that are now jobless n claiming benefits

If you think that Lowndes was a good shop, then you now have the opportunity to visit an even better shop.
Easy for people who live south of the town, its only 15 minutes to Cannock and the shop you need to visit is Jessicas, next door to the indoor market and behind Boots.
20 minutes free parking by Iceland or 2 hours on Morrisons

There is no shame in claiming so don't feel like there is.

Not only that, you should always sign on even if you don't need the money. If you don't then your NI has gaps in it which affects your pension. Signing on means your NI stamp gets paid.

That explains when I left uni and didn't start working til September why I had a NI bill for over the summer as I didn't claim anything!

I had a period of not signing on in my youth, as I didnt feel comfortable with it, I then had to pay a significant amount paying my NI. Also dont throw the immigrant argument into it, I understand you are smarting at the moment but it detracts.

Mother-In-Law who work(ed) there got told she wasn't even going to get paid along with 2 others, despite paying 2 other members of staff infront of her. I think she informed them that she would pay herself what she was owed from the till - and I don't blame her. They gave the staff no warning whatsoever. She found out towards the end of her last shift.

I genuinely doubt this if I'm honest. I've known the Lowndes family for a very long time and I know how much they've done to keep that business a float. All members of staff did get paid and were going to. The only members of staff that didn't get paid that week were the Lowndes family themselves as there wasn't enough money to pay them. Going into voluntary liquidation was a decision made the same week that it happened. The general advice from administration given to businesses is to not inform anyone until the last days of trading. Therefore this wasn't well planned and they were following professional advice. The idea of setting up the two shops in Stafford and Rugeley only came about as they'd still have to pay rent for them despite ceasing trading as they were under the original company name. Val and Keith have nothing to do with the new business with their children setting up the business in less than a week to stop their parents wracking up debt and to pay back what they owe to suppliers when they were trading under Lowndes Fruits Ltd. They're setting up with mostly family members as they can't afford to pay staff at current and cannot guarantee hours. They also want to keep wages to a minimum as the wage bill for Lowndes Fruits was one of the reasons the company was no longer viable. It's not to be spiteful to the staff that had been a part of the old company for years it's to stop the one of the problems that Val and Keith had with their business. Have you not stopped to consider the other side of the story instead of making them out to be monsters?!

Not a surprise. Obviously under a different name. I wouldn't wish them all the best - they've just put you on the unemployment list after 17 years of loyalty mate, and without even giving you any warning it was happening. I think it's a disgrace.
It's not a disgrace it obviously wasn't financially viable anymore. There wasn't any warning to be had under the advice of business administrators you don't say anything until the last day of trading. Besides from what I know it only happened that week they shut. They're opening up again as the two businesses are under a different business from when it originally set up and their sons are running them to pay the rent. It's not to get anyone's backs up.

If you don't give a stuff about people then it is very easy indeed.

The solution is quite simple. If you don't like the way they behaved, don't spend any money there, patronise somebody more deserving like County Fruits in Mill Street or save a shed load of cash and go to Lidl.
If they didn't give a stuff why would they have kept a financially struggling business a float for so long?! They've poured their money, heart and soul into keeping everyone in a job for so long but they couldn't do it anymore.
