Morrisons coming to Stafford?

Heard today that Morrison's isn't happening. Lidl are going to take over the store, with the existing Lidl being demolished to make way for the Western Access Road.

Not 100% certain it's true, but the source was good so it could well be. If so, it'll be public knowledge soon enough.

Lidl lease their current store and may not relish the new road taking part of their car-park. It can be fairly full in the daytime these days.

Where did you hear this?

I would very much welcome a large lidl in town...anyone else heard or can confirm?

Who even shops in Morrisons if their town has a choice of supermarkets? Far as I can tell the only people who shop there are stuck with no other supermarket to choose from locally. With an Asda, Tesco, Lidl, Sainsbury and Aldi in town i suspect morrisons is on to a loser anyway in Stafford

I won't say where it came from in case it isn't true, but the source was credible and someone who should know.

TBH I can see it being true. It makes sense - there's been a rumour going round for months that Morrison's have pulled out. Combine that with the Western Access Road and increased competition from Aldi and they'd be mad not to take the store given the opportunity. Makes more sense for Stafford too really. Our current offering is sufficient.

Possibly - we can but hope.

I'm not 100% sure of the chronology, but I think that, by the time Morrisons had a big change of management not that long after signing the 25 year lease for the Stafford store, Aldi had already moved on acquiring the ex-Freedom Caravans site.

One has to suspect that the new management at Morrisons might have preferred not to have been committed to Stafford - they pulled out of around ten other stores soon after the new regime was installed.

I'd be surprised if the rumour isn't true, same as the one about Riverslide Centre, Staffold Place and all the other buildings near the new UXB development having serious subsidence problems. Perhaps the councils could move into the unwanted Morrisons? Aisle 666 for Planning, just next to the white elephants and When it's Gone it's Gone section.
