Moving to Stafford

Thanks for all the replys, especially the pubs to avoid!. I've logged onto flatmate.co.uk which looks pretty good for finding accomodation, if a tad expensive, but if it works I 'spose it's money well spent. The bike shop link looks good as well, so many thanks for that one. If anyone can tell me if there are any NHS dentists left in Stafford, that would also help, been a few years since I had a clean and scrub, and the Jelly Babies now give me toothache in the morning!

Cheers

If you find an NHS dentist let me know too, not been for a few years myself! As for renting, dunno whats about at the min but GDH Properties sometimes have house shares available. Most of the room only properties round here are pretty much students only though, as it avoids council tax.

There was one in Stafford taking on people only a couple of months ago some where around Southwalls. I'll try and find out for you.

A couple of mates signed up and were seen within 2 or 3 weeks.

The dentist at southwalls (opposite the police station) is a proper NHS dentist and is soooooooo cheap (paid over £1000 for a root canal at Smile Style - crooks, which then broke off a few months later).

Used them last week for the first time. They are not taking any new people on until early autum. It is well worth putting your name down on the waiting list.

NHS Dentist!
The one opposite the police station is excellent. They are very friendly and will fit you in as quickly as possible. As far as I know they are still taking on NHS patients. Contact Louise at Stafford Dental Centre
24 Eastgate Street, Stafford, Staffordshire, England - Uk, ST16 2LZ
Tel: 01785 229591
Hope that helps! Welcome to Stafford Jamesb!

Thanks all for all the replies. Found a place to live close to the centre and I'm moving up on Friday morning. 1st stop after checking in with the landlord will be to buy a reconditioned pushbike, (I can hear my lungs coughing & spluttering already!)

I've found this page

http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/cityguides/city/stafford/essentials.aspx

is there anything anybody would like to add?

I particularly like Indian Food, can anybody recommend a good restaurant?

Also is the Grapes the best place for live music? not too keen on jazz, although the rock and jam nights sound good. Are these on set nights? (scrap that question, just found their website!)

Obviously missed the Garden Party :-( is there anything happening this weekend that I should go to?

Reading the beeb's website below, it appears that Stafford has many pubs, I particularly liked these comments from the same person.

"Worst thing about Stafford
If you're around 20+ there isn't really any nice bars or pubs that arn't 'trendy' or nasty. We want more old man pubs that you can go and have a quiet drink in"

"Best pub - The Railway
It's the only authentic old man pub left! You can get a nice pint and sit in a cosy room that has'nt changed for 30 years."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/mytown/staff/stafford/index.shtml

Personally, I like both, depending on my mood and whether I've a good book to read or not!

Having only seen the Railway Station in Stafford so far, I could not see an pub within a very close distance unless the Railway is the one opposite a garage that had metal shutters over the windows and looked closed down?

Looking forward to tomorrow night and if I can't find anywhere I like, at least I can pop to weatherspoons and sup some blackberry kopparberg!

well mr b, we're plotting another garden party so watch this space. railway is a good place to meet the right people, the pub you mention opposite the railway is the old stafford arms, keep walking past it, following the line of the railway and you will come to... THE railway. Thursdays, jam night at Joxer Brady's, just off market square. Sundays, Sofa's quiz night at The Lamb, opposite Sainsburys. Stick with us and you'll do just fine...

For me, the Railway is the best pub in Stafford by far, not just because it is less than a minute's walk from my house but also because it is the best example of what I think a classic pub should be - warm and friendly with a fantastic mix of folks from all walks of life. Whether early doors or last orders, I'm very happy to have a pint there. The pub also served as the perfect venue for the garden party.

It is near the station.

Does anyone else have a great local? A Forum Pub guide would be good, eh?

Indian Food: wouldn't venture much further than Mill Bank myself, Stafford Balti cheap, cheerful and excellent, Nishads just up from there has a good reputation and preferred by a few of my rugby chums, and The Malabar just around the corner in Water St also has a good reputation, though I find it a bit pricey.

Also a very interesting part of town. Site of the old Town Mill, and the Fire Station before it moved to where Asda is now.

if you want a bog standard balti then nishads is the one we always end up at. stafford balti seem to want you out the door as soon as theyve served you your meal. curry cuteer isnt bad either i think.

malabar is the bestest though - loads of choice, the best flavours...it is a bit more pricey but i think the extra coupla quid is well worth it.

worth pointing out that nishads and stafford balti are not licensed so you can take your own booze. malabar only do bottled beers, no draughts...

I ate at the Rose of Kashmir last night - very good service and nosh, bring your own beers. They said that they are so busy they're moving into the Reynold's, presumably what was Chill Bar - can't be bad.
