GREAT NEWS FOR STAFFORD !!

We are going to get something that we are really short of in our diverse town centre.

Oh yes, charity shop number 19 is on its way.

10 Gaolgate Street (The former EE mobile phone shop) is going to be a Blue Cross Animal Charity store.

How the town is going to donate enough gear to keep them all stocked will put a real pressure on us residents, especially when there are no proper shops to buy anything from in the first place.

Was going to come and joke on here about the former phone shop, saying they are doing it out, and it will be a thrift shop!

YMCA seems to have gone from connexions

Good on him. I'm guessing his main outlet is web based though so a shame it may not generate much more footfall to the area.

My foot fell in there yesterday - I doubt there's much overlap with that shop across the road, though...

..mind you, the lads in Maplin said that the new Home Bargains store in the old Comet place has greatly raised their footfall..

It's no wonder there are so many empty shops in Stafford, just look at these rents:

http://www.stafford-towncentre.co.uk/vacant_premises.htm

The old JJB has rent of 3K A WEEK! You'd need a massive profit each week to cover rent, wages and stock on this unit! Why do the landlords prefer shops to be empty for years rather than reducing the rent and getting a smaller amount but at least something? Or am I missing the obvious here??

In all fairness posters on this forum have saying that on here for years but there only4 empty shops on the high street ( not counting the high house as sbc are extending the museum this summer).
With an occupancy of over 90% the best in the west mids and well above the national average. For a town with nothing to offer and even more investment its not doing bad, to think the complaints if this was a stoke or wolverhampton forum.

The little munchkins and cupcake queen in mill street have been let and are in the process of being done out.
I also see pastiche have got planning permission to do out/ extend to downstairs.

Also in east gate st one of the empty premises opposite the gatehouse is being sold and also in the process of being done out.

Its easy to stop shops being empty when you allow so many charity shops into the town. Very few people go into town to visit a charity shop, they don't attract customers they just make the place look busier while paying massively reduced rates. Let small businesses that have just started up have the reduced rates too* and the town may pick up a bit.

* they already do this, but I don't think a single shop in Stafford town centre qualifies as it is only for those under a certain ratable value.

Out of these 2 are relocations of existing businesses therefore net gain = 1 shop
