Well charity shops are in abundance in every town and city so its all relative, if Stafford is a 90% occupancy with charity shops its still better than stoke at under 80% with charity shops.

All businesses (New) can claim rebates on such items as rates in Stafford in some cases you may not have pay business rates for the first year trading at all.

In fact the net gain from my previous email will be 3 not 1.

The problem is they don't draw business, very few people head to town to look in a charity shop. If they don't pay rates where is the shortfall made up, from other business owners rates? They don't even employ people, and from the current situation there seems to be a concerted effort to force them into the furthest end of town from the new development as possible.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
The only time I go into a charity shop is to drop stuff off. I cannot remember if I have ever actually bought anything from one.

I was in town this morning and it still feels desolate.

Agree with everything apart from the not employing people......when husband was made redundant last year he went for several interviews for manager of Charity shops - all paying upwards of 20k, many of the regular shop staff are also paid, very few are volunteers being paid nothing.

Its quite an eyeopener!

A few posts under my belt
I was a volunteer in the Salvation Army in town but they were recruiting for a 14 hr sales assistant job that I originally went for, I handed in my cv and said even if I didn't get the 14 he job I would still be willing to do some voluntary work so obviously they jumped at that chance and just stuck me in voluntary work not even giving me the opportunity to be interviewed

Good on him. I'm guessing his main outlet is web based though so a shame it may not generate much more footfall to the area.

Work's now virtually completed with the shelves and cabinets being stocked up, although they have a website http://www.topptrains.co.uk/ most of their trade is local with healthy repeat business as modellers have been without a decent shop between Kingswinford and Burslem for several years. They also attend shows around the area so it's proper retailing; it's also worth saying that some of the manufacturers/distributors within the hobby will not supply a reseller unless they have a bricks and mortar shop as they see a shop providing a point for after-sales service. Sure, there are internet discounters within the hobby which have devalued the product for some time but manufacturers are using different leverage tools to level the playing field as much as they can and help support local shops. For those of us within the hobby it's important that we don't just become a click and buy customer.

Scrapping Business rates for retail shops is long overdue as Andy Y says above it would be a sad day when we lose the face to face retailing to click and buy but that is the way things are going with shop based retailers hamstrung by costs that those on the internet haven't.
Sadly I feel the battle to save the High Street was lost years ago.

One of the shops in mill is called mooby moo, kids toys, furniture etc I think.

Stafford outdoor leisure on mill st are moving. It says 100 metres away, i guess it could one of the shops on mill st, misjudgment though as 100 metres would have them well on the high st :o: maximum health shop is also getting a serious refresh, ripped out inside and painting outside at mo.

Stafford Outdoor leisure is moving next door to us (saffron Lingerie) into the old cup cake shop and the Kiddies shop is opening around mid may. Someone is moving into the old Health shop over the road soon as well - Mill Street gossip is that it will be a shabby chic gift shop. Someone else has the old Connexions shop near Home bargain - maybe Peacocks? the man who told me they were moving back into stafford mentioned it would be up that end. Also the tattoo parlour near the Soup Kitchen is moving to Martin Street.
