I wonder if this was put to a vote of every motorist in the country how it would come out.

At no point did I say pedestrians or cyclists weren't dumb as well!
I can second that, I was waiting behind a car to pull out of my street yesterday and some cyclist was textnig or similar on his phone, heading down the cycle path are reasonable pace (perhaps 15 mph?) and just rode clean into the side of the car in front waiting at the junction. Suffice to say it was entirely his fault, I even gave my number to the woman in front in case anything ever came of it and she needed backup.

As a keen cyclist I have seen a lot of miles on the road, and I have been overtaken by people do speeds of up to 80 mph (at a guess) with no problem whatsoever - they gave me more than ample room. Job done.

It took me 3 hours to drive to Norwich today. I left at 5AM was there by 8. I guess I may have gone over the speed limit. I will have to go to confession.

On a side note... Whats the fastest anyone's ever dared to push it on the motorway?
I'm not posting that on here, I'd end up in prison.

A friend of mine managed a steady cruise at 155mph though, damned German limiters ;)

Driving down to J13 and after that to Wolves... obviously saw LOADS of speed cameras and lots of motorists (usually driving trucks or vans) perfectly at the speed limit so as not to get busted but at the same time speaking on the telephone...

I would say (though have absolutely no supporting evidence) that talking on a hand held mobile or texting whilst driving is lots more dangerous than speeding (within reason) yet how many people get done for the phone offenses? Compared to speeding it will be screw all.

THAT is why speed cameras are cash machines.

No, they simply enforce a law. The cameras are not available at present to shaft you for talking on a phone, for that we need more cops (and the budget doesn't like that plan!). And with speed cameras at least the tool who is texting while driving is doing so at a slower speed, and less likely to kill someone.

There is an amazingly easy way to not get caught speeding, thereby making all these so called 'cash machines' completely useless.

Yup, constantly stare at your speedometer in order to make sure you never accidentally drift above the speed limit. And accidentally run a family down in the process. But don't worry, you'll be going slow so they'll all survive ;)

If you honestly can't work out your speed to within a few mph you have a problem, you really don't need to keep checking.

I just don't get this whole problem with speed cameras, if you break the law you should accept it. Just because other crimes are being committed does not negate the one you are committing yourself. Drug users know it and accept it, despite them not harming anyone else (well, most of them), yet motorists are unable to grasp it.

Not disputing that at all, but you miss the point of my post completely.

This is incorrect - any video camera will capture people on the phone whilst driving... same with not wearing a seatbelt, picking their nose, putting make-up on etc... The difference is this will also pick up many motorists doing nothing wrong at all which means the cops (or civvies (sp?)) would have to manually look through it to find the offenders... thats far too expensive when speed cameras need very little human intervention to raise a few £££'s

And for the record:

1) No I am not condoning speeding
2) Yes I do think speed cameras do a good job
3) No I don't think all speed cameras should be ripped out
4) Yes I do try to stay within the speed limit
5) Yes I do understand that if people don't speed then they wouldn't get caught

However that doesn't mean that I can't see how much of a cash machine speed cameras are.... its a shame people from the other side of thinking can't see it.

But they can only make cash from people too stupid to follow the rules of the road, so it is really just a stupidity tax as I stated earlier. It is remarkably easy not to get caught, and if people did this we'd have less cameras anyway. If its just for profit they wouldn't install them if people didn't speed. Personally I think they should forget the fines and just give points, but I can't see that happening.

As for the technology to check for tards on phones, do you honestly expect them to pay people to watch a video 24/7? Once an automated system is devised, it will be used. Until then we have to rely on coppers to do it, of which we will have less.

I got a fine for a section 5 public disorder once, I assume thats just a cash machine too. Just because I broke the law a bit doesn't mean I was doing anything wrong.

I think a lot of this perception of what speed your going at has a lot to do with what you drive. For instance if your in a convertable sports car thats low to the ground it feels very fast because you can feel the wind, and for whatever reason it does feel faster. That is not just my opinion, it is a lot of peoples opinions. Same with motorbikes, you can feel like your doing more speed than you actually are. Which is the whole idea of some of these sorts of vehivles. But if your in a big comfortable mercedes thats automatic you can quite easily be going faster than you think because the dirving experience is so detatched and relaxed that you may occasionally be going faster than you thought. - THIS IS NOT DEFENDING PEOPLE WHO BREAK THE LAW BY SPEEDING!

And i would be very impressed if anyone on this forum could accelerate to 30 mph and stick to it with in one or two miles an hour with out a speedo. its just driving. Not some sort of mysitcal perception test...

Does anyone possess and use one of those radar devices? I've always wanted to get one but they're quite expensive. Some of the stuff they can do is pretty intelligent.

Also you can get laser scrambling devices and fit them to your grill by your number plate so the laser can't pick it up. If you get pulled, you just say its for an automatic garage door or gates to your home. Anyone tried this?

Actually yeah I think it was one of my brother's mates who had one of those Lidar jammers. He's got a 2 year ban now and had to sell his car to pay the fine. He was doing over 100 when he got busted and lets just say it wasn't on a motorway. twat.

this kind of thing I have no problem with btw, he got what he deserved, but don't trust jammers.

A Garda sergeant once said to me - "I don't mind people breaking the law - as long as they're doing nothing wrong."

a momentary lack of concentration can cause a fatality, if this happens whilst speeding and you're found with such a device, then forget about holidays for a few years......
