Romance - A Taste of Romance in Stafford

.....is not at all what you're thinking! Last night I was round at Sofa and Delilah's laying down some fresh beats, and it got to about half midnight when we realised that we hadn't eaten, and there was no food in the house. The decision was made to order a pizza, but none of us had any cash (or so we thought), so that limited us to places that took plastic. I'm not a big fan of the big pizza people like Domino's or Perfect Pizza, but that seemed like the only option. I called both and both were shut. This left us in a pickle, as by now we'd all become very hungry. Someone then remembered an advert in The Chronic for a new pizza/other things place on the Wolverhampton Road called Romance, so I called them instead. The guy answered the phone, so i asked him whether they were still delivering. To my dismay he told me that they were closed. Knowing that this could turn Sofa and Delilah's normally vegetarian household into a frenzy of cannibalism, i decided to turn on a bit of cheek and charm. I said 'Oh that's a real shame. We were really looking forward to trying one of your stone-baked pizzas. We've never tried one from Romance before, and would usually go to Domino's but thought we'd give you a try'. There was a slight pause, and then the guy said 'Ok, no problem. I'll make you a pizza and deliver it on my way home'! Hurrah! We could hardly believe it! We then sat there for a while wondering whether this guy would actually turn up, but after half an hour my phone rang, and it was the indeed pizza man! Me and Sofa went to the car and told the bloke how incredibly grateful we were, and gave him the £10 Sofa found upstairs, but he wouldn't let us pay! What a bloody nice guy. Anyway, I told him that i would big the place up on here in return for his generosity, so here it is. The pizza was genuinely delicious, and I would recommend giving this place a try!

what a top geezer!

obviously, he did have an ulterior motive in the hope that you would tell all your mates what a top place it was and how they should all go there....but he couldnt guarantee you would.

ill definitely be checking that out next time i come home!

i hope the goodwill on both sides will be fruitful.

Reward good service forumites, I don't need much of an excuse for partaking of pizza, so I'll be using them soon.

Lovely story but I do wonder who on earth thought it would be a good idea to call a takeaway gaff Romance!

Who gives a shit what they're called. For such an act of unbridled good will, I'm going to skill Romace right up when I move back by giving them some of my ever-so valuable custom.

Fair point Sir, but anything that removes the memory of the last place is good for me. As a Highfields / Rowley Park resident, (Depends whether I want to appear posh or extend my limited street cred') my memories of the last emporium are almost exclusively reserved for early hours visits. Always alone (altogether Awww!) trudging homewards in the early hours I'd grab a tray of, what could be loosley described as, chips, in order to make the journey home somehow bearable.

Now the early hours Wolverhampton Road shuffle is an entertaining phenomenon, best viewed by the sober. From 23.30hrs onwards a steady stream of inebriated folk wend their way home along this dreary thoroughfare. This dance consists of a forward step, followed by one steadying step to each side, and often a small one to the rear. Believe me it can take hours to get home. When you throw in a throw-up! and a quick jimmy[/] round about the old peoples home at the top of Rowley Bank, you are lucky to get home before its time to get up. So I am happy to see the new place, and look forward to sampling its wares, though I doubt it will stop open late enough to fuel my marathon.

The other reason for not mourning the loss of the old place was the battle of Wolverhampton Rd that was waged sometime at the end of the last millenium. I was renting a house at the town end of the Rd at the time and it all kicked off outside my gaff. To cut a long story short, the owners of the kebab house were involved in some nefarious activity, and a gang of out of town fellas came to have a friendly word with them.

The upshot was, that in broad daylight, about a dozen fellas spewed out of the kebab house, stopping the traffic, and proceeded to have a pitched battle outside our house! Now the fellas from the kebab house had brought their tools of the trade with them, and fingers were severed, and huge wounds were opened up in the melee. One big blade was discarded on my front lawn along with its decoration of fresh blood, nice!. There was blood all over the road, and casualties all over the place. A couple of walking wounded ended up in the insurance brokers, where the surprised staff had their first aid skills tested!

My mum had to actually pick her way through the bodies in her car on her way to collect my kids, she decided to carry on and pick them up later! Shortly after, there were bobbies absolutely everywhere, and a complete close down of that end of town. When the bobby came to take statements and asked if I had anything to report, I pointed to the 2ft long Kebab knife and said "I'll start with that!"

The Fire Brigade actually got called that day, for connected reasons, but I really can't tell you about that.

Needless to say, I'll never forget the old place.

Good point gon2seed. Never liked the last place, dreadful food always likely to give me a dicky tummy too. Nothing to do with the amount of alcohol I'd consumed of course.

Yes I think it was The Oasis, sold Chips, Burgers, Kebabs, and I think then branched out into a bit of curry etc'.
