I see where the 'Deak' is coming from as a spitfire pilot he would of spent many an hour during those sunny halcyon days of 1940 playing cards awaiting jerry. I guess that our 2 bob (10p) stakes would have brought back memories for him,no wonder he got edgey.....

Mr Belchamber at the county officers club, just his name evokes memories of reasonably priced meals, subsidised bar, cigars, leather chairs and strangely enough coughing....

last weeks freebie 'The Post' had a photo of some or other event in the Market Square and in the background was Woolworths the mainly grocery one which became Brian's. The current building has a display window adjacent to Hinds the jewellers, well where this window is, does anyone remember what marvel of the 20th century was there? It could be used freely by one and all.....

Woolworth's had moved by the time I got here. Anyone remember the second-hand shop in Eastgate Street, opposite the Gatehouse? It may have been called Resales, or something very similar.

Seems nobody here recalls the electronic 'town guide' on the wall of the old woolies/brian's wallpapers. the index along the bottom had a push button and hey presto this would light up a bullb on the map above, priceless......

I did, indeed, see this wonder of modern, interactive technology, but had forgotten that I remembered it, until you reminded me...

I remember it! One the "pleasures" of shopping in town with my Mum. That and having my arm ripped out of its socket by being dragged around.

I can vaguely remeber this one, was it under where the hat shop is?

I am not aware of hat shops. I will have a look. It would have been, maybe, next to the Sheridan, pretty well opposite the Gatehouse main door. Might be an estate agent now. Sold all sorts of stuff - before the charity shop invasion.

Interestingly, I also frequently fail to place the second 'm' in 'remember' - perhaps we are related?

Indeed, you never know... Quite possibly its due to my lack of concentration when typing the message... my bad

The old guy who used to sell the newspaper outside the post office. He had a laborador that held his own basket with his dairy milk in it.
The huge weighing scales that were by what is now River Island.
The dirty toilets in the market square that you had to pay a penny to go in and they stank.
Liptons which was next to Smiths.
Tesco's which was where Ethel Austins is.
The cafe up the stairs in the old market (great egg and chips)
The pram park at the front of the market. (social services would get involved nowadays)
Bratt and Dyke (the first shop in town with a lift) Where Macdonalds is.
The golden egg and Jenkinsons Cafe, also the cafe upstairs above Stantons Bakery.

The golden egg
Tesco's Home and Wear ( or 'non-food section', as I'm sure it would currently be termed ) had a back door out on to Salter Street. The food section was where Superdrug is now.

The Golden Egg was specifically recommended to recently arrived students in the information handed out by the Students' Union.

And before it was Tesco Home & Wear it was occupied by Victor Value, i remember the late great Bob Monkhouse doing a personal appearance there promoting eggs. Some eggs got dropped and broke causing joviality amongst townsfolk, i realise now that it was all probably staged.....

According to Wikipedia, Victor Value was the creation of the Cohen brothers and the chain was ultimately bought out by Tesco ( founded by some unrelated Cohens ) before being sold on to become Bejams and then ultimately part of Iceland.

Someone is still using the name, although I suspect that the lingerie range would not receive the Dairyglen or Delamere brands.

Wikipedia, now i'm sure Bob Monkhouse could have cracked a few funnies using that name.....
