Anyone been out on the roads this past hour? Wondering what conditions are like on the main roads at the moment.

between 9 pm and 10 pm slush and ice was the best way to describe them or lacking road salt would be another. to be fair to the gritting teams. I don't think the snow was expected below 200m which Stafford falls within

Thanks @cj1 . Just don't know what time to set off , although no-one is going to be sleeping beforehand (except hubby who's already gone to bed for the night..) and sitting around bored and on pins . Might as well start off now , a couple of hours before I'd planned to.

The roads were still slushy when I got off the motorway on the way back in the early hours, but turned onto Wildwood and it was like a skating rink with solid ice all the way back to my (thankfully) cleared and gritted driveway. No new snow in sight once I'd got a couple of miles down the M6 , just black ice nearer the airport.
Don't know what happened to the car transporter on the grass verge down silkmore lane just after midnight , there were a couple of rescue type trucks on the road each end of it. If it was the same one , it was parked in the new layby bit outside BMW when I came back up, minus the cars that were on it earlier .
Our road and pavements are still treacherous with solid ice . Dreading my shuffle to the doctors in a bit, starting off super early.

More snow :(

Watch the roads folks, hubby says lethal out there this morning. Been another accident on the ringroad near Asda, someone else skidded into barrier on the bend (going northbound)and cops in attendance. One lane blocked off.

Main roads fine now.

Getting up the drive this morning at 5.30 was somewhat more problematic than it has been the rest of the week. Ironic considering that the snow was minimal in comparison. Still two bags of elcheapo dishwasher salt and half an hour later, what passes for normality was restored.

Followed at a very safe distance a very slow moving BMW 5 Series between Newport and Shrewsbury. We got to a straight, so I overtook him as the road had been gritted and near-normal speeds were possible. For some reason that made him speed up, flash his lights, keep his horn pressed down and gesture frantically at me for nearly a mile before he disappeared into the distance.

I suppose it was his road, so I should have asked permission to pass.

I skidded a few times today for the first time all week. The A5 was fine, but the roads before that, which have been covered with slush until today, were covered in ice.

It has to be said that the Met Office warning emails have been pretty much spot on for the past week or so.

It is a shame, however, that they've been so utterly useless for the previous two years that I've paid scanty regard to them.

Why do you feel the need to point out that it was a BMW driver? Your jealousy is showing through. He was presumably flashing his lights to point out to you how stupid you were, overtaking in poor conditions and causing a danger to him, to other more sensible road users, and to yourself.

Most of us are aware of how awful BMWs (the rear wheel drive versions) are in this weather. I could afford to buy a BMW if I chose to, but whenever there was ice around I know it wouldn't handle it, so I get a car that can cope, that happens to cost less. Win win.
