Monday's commute to sunny chaven'try.....sorry Coventry only took the standard 55 minutes......hardly a soul on the M6 for a Monday.

Saying that....the roads where I work are 6" deep......including the car park....so being the nice person I am...I cleared them out, only to snap my cheapo Asda snow shovel in 2.....

I went to Bristol on a motorbike, just before that nasty, early December snowfall that happened some time in the mid/late 90s. By the time I was due to return here on Sunday, the full White Hell system was in operation. Official advice was that travel north of Gloucester was possible with four-wheel drive, but only up to Tewkesbury - beyond that, there was nothing..

I decided to see how true this was, based on years of experience of some exaggeration in these reports. I could always turn round, if things got too dodgy.

I did not put a tyre on snow or ice until I got onto my own drive. It was eerie, like a post-nuclear attack scene.

Even better, the power had been off here for most of the two days and I switched the hall light on to see if it was still off - it was, but it came back on about five seconds later.

Hubby got in touch to say he was at work safe. He was amazed at how many silly idiots were driving with the cars covered and back windows still completely snowed up :ohno:

Standing up the top of my drive in my dressing gown today, battling to get the bin lids unstuck. Rather icy out there still, but at least the brown bin has been emptied this morning.

Lying freezing in bed last night, decided it was time to change the summer sheets for the flannelette ones.

was quite funny watching a chap in a brand new BMW M3 struggle on the snow / ice here........after about 5 minutes I gave him a hand.....still snaked all over the place.

Rear wheel drive and snow.....FUN!!

I have not been out since a run up to Sainsbury’s on Friday evening. On that trip I was able to give TB2 a first test run on snow, it now has the new CrossClimate tyres fitted.

Driving up through the lanes into Doxey was no problem but I thought the railway bridge might be more of a challenge; it coped with the uphill bend without drama, no slip or lights on the dash. Tyres will need a longer run on snow, to give them a proper test, but so far so good.

I picked a really bad week for a Driving test :snowman:
Good luck , hope the weather improves for it and it does go ahead. When is it?

That was my big worry when sons test was due and the weather started to deteriate as it was getting close, I had frosty conditions on mine and the emergency stop was down an icy Fairway. Managed to keep in a straight line as it skidded along the road to a stop when I slammed my brakes on. Then later had to do a real emergency stop as some-one suddenly changed their mind about walking towards town on the pavement and, without looking, ran across the zebra crossing by the prison, so proved (luckily for them and me) that I could actually stop quick.( I see they have metal barriers there now each side of the crossing..)

At least you don't have to drive along with your window open these days, waiting for the instructions to do hand signals!

M6 is fine, side roads of West Bromwich are really bad, Stafford, even though they are clear, I assume black ice on New Look roundabout and Asda roundabout. Take it easy.
Found this out the hard way on Saturday morning. Heading towards Queensway, car went sideways into the metal barrier on the left hand side.

Road can’t have seen a grain of salt.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Even the main roads are VERY icey now!

According to Derbyshire County Council (I couldn't find any relevant info on Staffordshire's website):
In the concentrations we use on our roads salt does not melt ice below minus eight degrees centigrade and is less effective at temperatures below minus five degrees centigrade.

According to the Met Office, tonight's overnight low will be -13°C, even lower in rural areas.

Let's be very careful out there!

Reported a Tesco truck driver who decided to park up on Ranshaw Drive (entrance to the Crossings estate) on a corner..

It happens every month or so likely the same driver but with a frozen road it was an accident waiting to happen....

Krakow for a few days, for any Christmas markets.

Yes, the motorway is becoming favourite. I'm just a bit wary of getting stuck somewhere for a couple of hours without the chance to do a U-turn and try another route. But balance that against better gritting of motorways compared to A roads, It's going to be interesting, but hopefully not too interesting.
Yes, the motorway route was the right answer.

I left Baswich at 6:45 and was at J14 at 7:00. I rarely got above 50mph and got to Manchester airport at 8:20. The only incident I saw was on Queensway where a car had tried to take the ASDA roundabout too quickly and went into the barrier. Another car was parked a little further on and a police car was in attendance. I suspect they may have put too much faith in the gritting as it was a bit patchy.

Krakow is excellent. A few degrees warmer than Stafford.

Just ventured to Lidl whilst things were quiet. Began to wonder if it has become compulsory to have only one headlight on in these conditions.

Madford car park could be exciting, if entered at any speed.

The dash thermometer showed -4, but there was no spatter on the screen when following traffic, often a clue of a temperature well below freezing.

There was plenty of potential for over-ambition. Quite a few places where roofloads of snow had been dropped.
