Expert, attempting to give a calm assessment on the radio this morning: all spiders in this country are venomous but in this country, it's only about twelve per cent of spiders have fangs large enough to pierce human skin.

He went on to 'reassure' us that spiders don't actually hunt humans, it is more likely that they have got stuck between clothes and skin or (dear God) bed clothes and skin.

Apparently most will not bother to inject venom, they will just give a 'dry bite'.

So there we are then. Nothing to fear here.

I think I may repeal my husband's No Spaniels In The Bedroom law. She is going to have to check the bed before I get in it.
Think I may have been bitten once when removing one from the house. Had a slight numbness in my fingertip.

I read yesterday that some poor bloke nearly had his leg amputated after being bitten by one of those False Widow spiders :(

Ewww someone else! The bloke I read about was bitten on the leg in a school that he was decorating....he had to have most of his leg muscle removed :( Poor bloke.

Also, this article says they are the size of a 50p but the article I read said they're only the size of a 20p!!

Horrid things!

Lots of scare mongering in the press regarding these atm. Unless you have an allergy like with bee's their bite is painful, much like a wasp or bee sting, but certainly not deadly. More serious problems occur when it also gets infected.
