Staffordshire Hoard

Agree, but suppose the Hoard was found in the very south of the county, pretty near to West Mids, Where ever that is!

I am told that..The monies to purchase the Staffordshire is in place

There is however, an apparent need for funds to exhibit the Staffordshire in the 'right' environment.
It is more that the money is needed to clean and categorise the finds.

Apparently it takes on average 2 days per item to carry this out and the Hoard consists of 1500 items! They are looking for a further £1.7m which is a spicy meatball to say the least.

Birmingham may not be in Staffordshire but at least it was in Mercia.

Ketchup notwithstanding, there will also need to be a lot of analysis on the finds.

Many of them may be pieces of single items such as helmets or book bindings which will take time (and manpower of course) to determine. Once they have been pieced together there will also be the effort of creating replicas to better show how they would have originally appeared.

One of the interesting things said last night was that jewellers had been consulted about some of the workings on the finds who had thought it impossible that such work could be done without a means of magnification of at least x6, something unknown in the 7th century.

Interesting times.

Word reaches me that we will have about 40 pieces from the Hoard on display in the Shire Hall in early July. Will tell more as and when i know.

How exciting! :)

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
Am I the only one who feels the finder and farmer were diddled?

not sure what the eventual total was but surely this lot are worth ten times the sum assumed

Been down this morning. I thought it was really well organised, just the right number of people so its not too crowded.

Its not a huge exhibition, but the big peices seem to be there, complimented by replicas to show you what they might have looked like in their original state. There's even some pick up replicas (helmets, swords), interactive display screens and a few souvenirs as well.

A fantastic insight into a piece of our history. I have to admit I didn't know that Stafford was the capital of the kingdom of Mercia at one time. Well done to all those involved in bringing the hoard "home".
