'AND cyclist with out lights at night and ones who use the pavement and ones who ignore red lights pee me off too!'

Where I live is there are many oriental students and they all ride bikes ON THE PATH and they ride in groups of at least 2 or 3. Many times as I've walked out of my gate I've almost got kncked down. I keep trying to politely say it's wrong but all I get is big smiles and Sorry.

The COUNTY Council (is that okay doctor) have provided the cyclists with cycle lanes and they still insist on going down lamascote rd into town on the road. Usually the proffesional in his cycle shorts helmet and legs going ten to the dozen. Yet they would be the first to complain if someone cut them up.

Message to cyclists, where there is a cycle lane, please, GET OFF THE ROAD, where there isn't a cycle lane, please, GET OF THE PATH. Thank you.
Strangely I am in 100% agreement with you on this.
Does this mean we're bonding?

What about horse riders, now they pi** me off no end,.

I was tootling round the chase on sunday when i came across a pair of them together in the road chatting to each other.

i had to trundle at 11 mph behind tham for about 1/2 a mile until the road became wide enough for me to pass. Then the bastards(sorry) gave me a very rude hand gesture because i had had the nerve to pass them .

NO! no no no no no no! and again NO!

Cyclists have every right to cycle on the roads regardless of cycle paths. The paths are often trecherous and full of glass etc. they take you where you don't want to go and plank tou back on the road at dangerous positions and at dangerous angles. Cyclists have a right to the road - car drivers don't they have to posses a license and pay a duty for that privelage. The paths are for grannies and kids - anyone who can cycle competently should be on the road.

Don't agree, I spent 5 years living in germany where cyclists and pedestrians work very well with each other. This is a relatively new idea in this country and I think if all cyclists gave it a chance it would work well. The roads are too dangerous for cyclists especially the young. My eldest son is 9 and gets really upset with me because I wont let him ride his bike to his friends house without me or mr labcm. The roads are far too dangerous, I can't see that I will ever be comfortable with it. Bring on the cycle paths.

If cycle lanes were safe and useable, as they are in much of Western Europe, I would use them. Stafford's are a joke, They are just put down to fill quotas and tick boxes. They make little sense, don't join up, frequently end in the middle of nowhere, and take you away from where you want to go. Add to that people parking in them, ie Tixall Road! swerving into them, Queensway! etc, I avoid them most of the time.

I confess I ride my bike like a maniac, and am probably cursed rotten by many a car driver. I take risks, and If you knock me off, I'll admit it's my fault if I was in the wrong. (assuming I am still able to talk). How can I justify this attitude...

Well I am keeping fit, thus saving the NHS money (I have yet to have an injury); saving the planet (even if you don't subscribe to human influenced global warming, I create little pollution other than the odd fart.), reduce traffic congestion; and finally brighten up many a maiden's day by wearing lycra shorts! I'll keep riding on the road, and in and out of the traffic, because it gets me to work in half the time, and reduces my stress levels considerably by not having to sit in Stafford's horrendous car queues!

The roads are too dangerouse because there aren't enough cyclists! With the vast increase of cyclists in London (and in other studies in European cities) it has been shown that once drivers are more familliar with cyclists then accidents involving ccylists and cars go down - the roads become more safe the more cyclists there are.

I'm all in favour of cycle paths for those who are more at risk such as kids and grannies but the cycle paths are there more to protect pedestrians who moan like mad about cyclists wizzing past them on pavements and so on. Many contries are fine with joint use facilities - town centers like Stafford would be pedestrian and cyclist but we can't seem to do that here so we seperate the cyclists off to stop pedestrians complainning - even though there are next to no reported serious injuries on pavements caused by cyclists but around 40 people are killed by CARS on pavements every year!

It's all a mad crazyness but at the heart of my argument is always that if we don't exercise our rights we lose them. - see this (read the one from August lower on the page first) http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4516 that goes for all of them not just cycling stuff. Our freedoms were fought for and we need to fight to maintain them.

Happy cycling - and I hope your son keeps pedaling into a better world

what a ridiculous thing to say.. a driving licence is not analogous to a TV licence and you know it..

When I'm elected President of the Known Universe, cyclists will be licensed and paying road tax.
So will horse riders.

Forgot one. People with their front fog lights on regardless of the fact there's no fog. Usually with Max Power stickers in the rear, (extra 15mph guaranteed).

Here Here, you could also look at it this way, the drivers pass a test and pay to use the roads, the cyclists don't so drivers have priority.

Drivers pay no more to use the roads than do cyclists. Fuel duty and vehicle excise duty go into general taxation. So what I paid for in VAT on the CD I bought the other day pays for roads just as much as your tax disc. A lot of cyclists also have cars - except they obviously choose to leave them at home sometimes.

I'd gladly pay "road tax" for my bicycle, based on emissions or damage done to road surfaces it would be zero :)

Any driver who thinks they have priority over me when they don't gets the 115 decibel air horn I have on my bicycle....

I agree with Doctor's comments that a lot of off-road cycle farcilities are often a waste of space, and bloody dangerous in places. They also slow your journey and aren't suitable for cycling on at anything other than slow speed.
