The Pie and Ale House

I agree with everything tek wrote, excellent service. I had the Thai Chook and Mrs Wyred had the Mr Porkie, I was also offered samples of the ale prior to deciding, which I thought was good, in the end I opted for The Jennings Cocker Hoop. The only negative (sort of) is the meal size, with me being a bit of a pig I could’ve eaten two pies :pig:

at first i thought i'd be left hungry but no it was just right, the 'Matador' contained steak chorizo and olive delicious, it went down a treat with a couple of 49rs. I did notice a couple of mixed up orders but i'm sure that'll be sorted with time. The crimbo tree upstairs looked a bit lost and maybe some lights would improve it. Dyson Airblade in the bogs.........:xmas:

Mrs Wookie and I went in yesterday for lunch. Nice decor inside - it's been repainted white so it looks a lot lighter, the seating is nice, and the locks on the men's toilets now work.

I had the Matador pie, she had the Moo - both were very good, but I agree that £5.95 is about the limit I would have paid. A pot of tea with a hot water refill is very well priced at £1.50, and there are several different varieties - and they're not teabags, it's a proper tree in the pot. :)

We were then dragged back in there later in the afternoon by ex-flatmate Caveman for a beer session. I can say without fear of contradiction that the Budwar Light is *excellent*, but it goes down far too easily. Let me take this opportunity to apologise to anyone that was in there on Saturday afternoon and was offended by the hairy drunk at the corner table. :)

To sum up, an excellent place, and I for one will certainly be returning. A few things could do with tweaking - the mat inside the door could do with being moved or cut so it doesn't let the cold in, the knife I had was a bit blunt and I ended up hacking the pie instead of cutting it, and they could do with some mugs for those of us with large fingers who can't operate a teacup. :) Other than that, though, the place is splendid.

We went in for lunch yesterday too...certainly lived up to expectations!

I had the Christmas :pie: (venison and game) and it was very nice indeed. As I have a crapetite there was more than enough for me, and the cheeky hint of mint in the mushy peas was yum. A pint of Budwar Light followed by a pint of Cocker Hoop washed it all down nicely. The only thing that wasn't quite right was the tin plate the food was served on, like something out of a camping set. Slightly odd, but as I wasn't eating the plate it didn't really matter. I will definitely be returning soon!

:)

It all sounds like the same set up as the place that sells PieMinister pies at Trentham; anyone know if they are the same owners?

we were there 12.30 'til about 2 i actually like the tin plate and the simpler they keep it the more chance they have of making a go of it. Sneaked in today for a swift 'empire'and thought that at least Stafford has somewhere else to dine out on a sunday........:xmas:

My housemate ate at ye olde pie and ale house last night and spent about an hour and a half ranting and raving about how great his pie and ale was. Looking forward to it

Some friends went there yesterday afternoon and came back very disappointed. Having ordered their food they waited 2½ hours before eventually deciding to leave. During their wait they were plied with 3 free carafes of wine, but never got any food or an explanation. Seems strange when all they're doing is reheating the pies, so I can only assume that there was a problem with the ovens or something.

Oh dear, so it looks like the service is a little hit and miss :( 2½ hours is a bit of a joke though, regardless of free wine. I think I'll reserve judgement until we all hook up in a couple of weeks but I hope that this pace is no disappointment!!

Regardless of the service it will be nice to have a bit of a social anyway

Any idea if others were eating, or was everyone left without food?
They said that there were others eating, but there were also quite a few others who left after a similar amount of time without being fed. Maybe the ones who were eating had waited a similar amount of time and just decided to stick ot out.

i reckon id have stayed there for as long as possible if the wine was free....and then got someone to drop a macdonalds in whilst we waited! at least they tried to keep the customers happy even though they couldnt feed them- although it seems odd some were eating.

im always hungry about an hour after eating any maccy d's food as its so full of air, so id have still been able to manage a :pie: after!

i dont suppose anybosy told them about their thread on here? maybe we could get a response from them and find out what the issue was?

either way- roll on the 23rd!!!! :D
