I don't get it; why don't folks just post under their own names? Are they scared that people may recognise them? It kills me that people with forum names like Dr Death, General destruction and the like are normally aged 13 with spots.

2 starting letters from my (abbreviated) first name, 3 starting letters from my surname.

Did you ever notice how, in the Navy Lark, most of the characters used the same surname as the actor playing them - Lieutenant Phillips, Commander Murray, Wren Chasen, etc.

I'm sure nobody will mind if you want to use your real name though :)

(a lot of people on here know each other in real life anyway)

I wish I had never used my first name as my username; Basil seems to think there's only one Lucy in the whole of Stafford.

It's not a rule at all! You neglected to quote the following part of that post, which clearly reads:

Admin said:
Some people have chosen a username that obviously relates to their real name, which is absolutey fine. Others have chosen a username which is more anonymous, which is also fine.
That post is simply there to say that, if someone has chosen an anonymous username, we should all assume that they don't really want all and sundry knowing their personal details and should refer to them only by their chosen moniker. :)

These days, you cannot be too careful with your personal data, especially online.

If you registered with your real name and someone wanted to steal your identity, a simple Google search would instantly link them to all your posts on here. Not only would they discover that you are from Stafford, but from reading your posts they would most likely glean all kinds of knowledge which would help them in their nefarious plan!

ToriRat

Is that a Moomin?
Tori Rat....well apart from a few missing letters at the end of the surname its all me baby

tek-monkey

Not only was I christened Tek-monkey Archibald III (double barreled first name, how posh am I eh?), but my avatar is also a photo of me aged 15 3/4.

as well as the data protection thing, people just like using nicknames innit.. down the pub, people don't call me by my full name.. "dirty bobby" is my nickname (usually abbreviated to just "bobby", fortunately) so it makes sense that that's what online "friends" should call me also..

Some people even use nicknames in their official capacities.

Makes him sound a bit like a gangster, don't you think?

And 'fish exporter'? I would have thought that fish are generally capable of exporting themselves, should they choose to.
