What I would like to see in Stafford is.....

Hi To my fellow Staffordians

Although this is my first post on the Stafford forum, I have been an avid reader of the forum for some years but only recently just plucked up the courage to start a thread. Please forgive me in advance if this thread has been done before....

Like many of you I am dismayed at the number of empty retail units in Stafford even though we are told that the current ratio of vacant units is far better than the national trend. This led me to think what Stafford needs or what could enhance Stafford and I have come up with a number of ideas. I welcome your comments and thoughts on my suggestions.

1. Beer emporium/wine merchants - Over recent years Stafford has seen an influx of really real ale pubs and there are a host of local brewerys producing excellent beers namely Slaters, Lymstone, Titanic and Joules. I am constantly raving about these beers and therefore would love to see a beer emporium where all these beers can be sold and showcased and maybe even some history into the brewery. This retail unit would be in a similar vain to the excellent Greengate Deli run by the Lewis Partnerships which does a fantastic job of showcasing locally produced food. The farmers market is always a great success and shows that there is a market for people who want to purchase locally produced beers and wines.

2. A town creche - This would be similar to the play centre that has recently opened in Cannock, however this would be in town location, preferably one of the large retail units and would be a wack warehouse type venture. This faciltiy would allow adults to shop in peace and experince some of the great bars, cafes and restuarants while their children are looked after.

3. A youth club/bar - I may be showing my age, (I have only just turned 30) but I dont like seeing gangs of children hanging around the streets or in McDonalds especially when they are shouting like they were last week when i attended with my young nephew. Therefore I would like to see a venue where there youngsters can chill out, play games, watch movies and get some career advice/guidance. I envisage this venue to be an 'american style diner' but with a twist, i would like to see the staff encourage the youngsters to become involved in the community and take an active role.

4. A tapas/bistro - This would ideally be housed in the St Marys mews development. Although the Swan and Post House offer excellent food, there is a limited selection of restuarants in Stafford when you compare our town to Lichfield/Shrewsbury etc, especially if you want anything other than a curry. Curretly those Staffordians who would like a Tapas meal are forced to travel to Birmingham.

5. Reintroduction of the canal link to the River Sow - I would really love to see a boat bus and narrow boats in the Town centre, not only would this enhance the river sow, which looks a mess but it would also bring a different type of person to the town centre. The boat bus would be similar to what is currently used at Brindley Place to the Mailbox but the Stafford version would operate over a smaller route and the boats would be far smaller. My vision would be for those boats to operate from the proposed residential home at the now Riverway Council offices to Sainsbury's with regular stops along the route ie at the Borough council, Yard, College and then finally Sainsbury's.

My last suggestion for those of you that are getting bored of my ramblings.....

6. An activity centre for young adults and big kids - This centre would cater for more active individuals and would house rock climbing walls, wave machine, and a bmx track. This would obvioulsy be an expensive venture but would attract people to visit the area.

I am now being hounded for the computer so some of my suggestions may not be quite as coherent as they could of been due to me rushing to appease the girlfriend. I welcome all your comments/suggestions and criticisms.

Hi Ben, and welcome to the forum.

I like the idea of the canal & the sow linking up, I think the Sow is an overlooked assett to the town.

I remember seeing an old b&w photo of punting going on in the Sow, it would be nice to see something like this resurrected.

The weir in the park would be a problem - as it is it slows the flow of the river both up and down stream of it. I have no idea what effect removing it would have, but it is possible it would make the river too fast for leisurely punting. Presumably a lock would need to be installed if boats were to travel between Riverside and Sainsburys.

A boat service would be very cool, but i doubt it would be financially viable.

Hi

Thankyou for your comments. As you can tell I have not researched any of the above suggestions to see if they are financially viable, they are merely from my observations and wants for the town, so I am very interested to know what other people think.

One more thing I would like to see would be a symphony hall in Stafford at the old library next to the cinema. I would love to see all of the orchestras and bands that rehearse in the Stafford area to all be housed in the same place and to be encouraged to put on a soiree preferably once a month. If a partnership with the Post house and Swan could be agreed whereby visitors could enjoy a pre-meal / drink at the Post House or Swan as part of the price of the ticket it could be a great evening experience. For those visitors who did not want a meal, welcoming drinks and canopes could be provided by the two venues. Ideally the foods/wines and beers offered would be from the local area and therefore would showcase what Staffordshire has to offer.

I've said it before and will probably say it again, knock down the building that is mcdonald's, and leave an open area so you can see St Mary's and the side of the high house. There are plenty of large empty places Mcdonalds can go, kids are constantly hanging out there but I've noticed the stone work at the high house is becoming damaged, I'd be shocked if this is not related to the amount of youths congregated around with scooters and bikes.

I don't really understand the scooter thing, when I was young if you were hanging around on a scooter any older than six or seven years old the other kids would laugh at you and call you names, it just wasn't cool!

Some excellent ideas but there are many barriers in the way to see positive redevelopment of the town, ie landlords, market conditions, competition from big supermarkets etc.
I am of the believe that as the county town Stafford should be aiming to attract visitors from the surronding large towns and cities. We have seen a number of new bars opening and there is alot of development coming our way shortly, although it would have been nice to see a new retailer moving into town rather than Marks & Spencers relocating and leaving a large store in the high street.
I too see the comparisons with Lichfield and think there is room for a wider range of eating places and more smaller shops although there is a lack of affordable properties in the town centre.
I liked the idea of a quality vintners/beer seller in the town but it is hard for independants to compete for trade with the likes of tescos etc.

I recently came across a group who are campaigning to re-introduce a boating route from the Haywoods at least as far as ASDA

'We' recently spent an inordinate amount on the river in the Victoria Park area and still ended up with no rowing boats for hire - this remains a mystery to me.

If you want these establishments so badly, go and open one - (This is my same issue with people complaining about the forthcoming Vodka Bar) I don't have the guts to open anything, or run a business, I know this, so I'm not one to complain that things are 'missing' from this town - I have the up most respect for anyone who does take the plunge and open a business.

And I will support as many independent local businesses as I can to do my part, and encourage others.

I'm just fed up of people winging that there isn't this kind of shop, or there are too many of another, or something has opened up they don't care about - stop whining, take the initiative and do something about it, or stop complaining /rant over

Wormella, I think you may have misunderstand my initial post.... I am no way complaining or whining about Stafford, I happen to enjoy living in Stafford and think we are very fortunate to have such a nice town. The point i made in the first post is merely my observations of what I think would work well in the town.

I am a chartered Building Surveyor and not a businessman and therefore I do not have the required skills to open and run a business, however like you I will always try and support local businesses.

Former Muse restaurant at St. Mary's Mews is available to let ready to trade (£18K/annum) if anyone fancies another crack at that...!

Interestingly, quite a lot of things on that list are 'under offer'

Although I'm never sure how much to read into that.

They include buildings that were previously:

Peter's Pan
Whatever was next to Subway
The above mentioned Mews restaurant
Fit 4 Life
The long shop at the end of Mill Street that used to have furniture in it.

Signs of forthcoming investment in our beloved town?

Please let's not turn the green into another nightclub.
I heard, I think on this forum so may or may not be true, a multi cultural all you can eat restaurant is on the cards. It would make an excellent live music venue...

don't mention the blinds
It (the green) was priced at 500k, currently chain bar/restaurants are still pulling in cash; Nandos, Zizzi, Cafe Rouge, Vodka Revolution, Ego, Strada, Bar Ha-Ha, Wagamama are some of the liklely candidates......
