What's happening to The Island pub?

We had a listed building where the traffic lights are - the White Lion - we paid to have it very carefully dismantled, examined, recorded and stored for re-erection elsewhere in the town - then it was thrown away.

ben0239's right, they are ugly windows.

A few hundred quid more* could have made this place look great again!

* yeah yeah yeah, not my money etc etc blah blah blah, I'm just having a say in the look of a building that's in my town, I will always want what I feel is best for the integrity and coherence of historical Stafford buildings, that made me come and want to live here in the first place!

I think you'll find the correct response given for the conclusion of this building was "erm, yeah, we don't know where we put it last..."?!

There is no requirement for a planning application to have been made to the change the use of the Island PH to the Island Indian Restaurant because a PH (A3 use) can be changed to a restaurant (A4 use) without planning permission. Consequently, I suspect the works that have been undertaken have not had any formal approval from SBC. Only external works to the building, subject to what they are, require planning approval.

In most cases, you don't need planning permission to change the windows unless the property is within a conservation area. If the Island is within a conservation area then the SBC would be perfectly within their rights to request that the owner applies for retrospective planning permission for the UPVC windows and SBC should do this. A building does not to be listed for the Council to be justified in doing this.

As part of the planning consent, SBC can insist that the installed windows should be of a higher standard than those currently installed.

I would hope SBC have contacted the owner of the Island because the installed windows do not 'preserve or enhance the conservation area' and do cheapen the building.

I wonder what listeners feel about the windows on the Stafford Borough Council offices

Royal Brine anyone?

I'm not aware that SBC offices are within a conservation area. However, the windows are the least of the buildings problems. It's an awful building that I would love to see demolished.

I can't believe the Royal Brine baths were demolished to make away for the SBC offices.

To get back on track slightly ...SBC have a terrible track record of ensuring new developments preserve or enhance conservation areas or listed buildings, as demonstrated by McDonalds next door to the ancient high house, the office block opposite the Gatehouse theatre and the Santander building in Market Square.

At least one Forumite wasn't too happy when one of them fell out and her shop was virtually blocked off for a while...

You'll ask a lot of people before you find somebody that actually believes that the Brine Baths really had to come down.

About 2 months ago I saw a couple of men discussing what they could do to the building and then a few weeks ago all of the windows were boarded up.

The pub isn't on the Fleurets website but the sign still says For Sale. I understand the building has now been sold.

Anyone got any more news about what's happening?

I hope it reopens as a pub again.
