What's happening to The Island pub?

New gas supply being installed today - still a bit of devastation inside, though...

Cordoned off about 5 or 6 of the 2 hour parking spaces in front of it during the gas works as well, so not many available parking spaces even at 8.15am this morning .

The door was open yesterday so I looked inside, was greeted by a gloss black and frosted glass partition with some chrome bits on it. Thats it decided, old pub plus out of place chrome equals Indian restaurant. Or a gay bar I guess?

Why compromise?

I would love the Island to be another real ale pub, however I think its destined to be another curry house. I love curry's but surely we are close to reaching saturation point...

I want more real ale!

Indeed. Have we not discussed on here the new place that has opened in St Mary's Muse.... the name eludes me now....

It looks very nice Gramsaic and I may give it a visit, however it does reinforce my view that we don't any more. Stafford seriously lacks any other type of cuisine and there is always a need for more real ale pubs.

Maybe when / if the old library gets converted to a buffet restaurant Stafford may boast a variety of different cuisines, however I won't hold my breath. I recently visited this buffet restaurant in Bristol http://www.zazabazaar.com/the-food, which serves Vietnam, sushi, thai etc and it was lovely. Please come to Stafford!

It does look the part - I think we have eleven eat-in curry houses at the moment.

As with all these things, real ale pubs included, the market will prevail - if 'we' really do want them, then they will be here and they will survive...

I have no idea where those places are, however I'm sure they are very nice.

Whiteladies Road runs from (almost) the top of Park Street right up to the edge of the Downs - the Blackboy is an unofficial name for the latter, steeply sloping part of it. I lived just off the bottom of the hill, in Hampton Park, on and off for a few years.

I was told hush hush (don't tell anyone) that the Island pub is being opened as a curry house by the people who owned Panache on stone road but under a new name (obviously) ;)
