The whole bidding process does seem to be overly complicated and wasteful - really the right to host the competition should be offered in rotation to interested nations from Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and back again by pulling the name out of a hat.

The only problem with this solution, of course, is the lack of opportunity for FIFA officials to eat fancy dinners in expensive restaurants and walk away with pleasingly stuffed envelopes.
