Not got a clue. What on earth is their business model to make such a decision 5 weeks in when they are not set as a business and with Christmas coming up. Failure I am afraid.
takeaway was part of their planning set up.

I too was looking forward to trying this place. Perhaps it's easier to get planning permission to change use from a restaurant to a takeaway than applying for a takeaway.
Cynic moi?

They have had a takeaway in there from day one.
It's still going to be a restaurant but it will be a fish and chip restaurant - now if I was in, say Llandudno (or any other seaside town) I would visit a fish and chip restaurant. I can't imagine I would specifically visit a fish and chip restaurant in Stafford. That's not to say I wouldn't have fish and chips from time to time if I visited a restaurant with a menu that had a dish that just happened to be fish and chips but with a choice of other food too but I just can't imagine a group of people deciding to go for a meal at a place (plaice) that only sells fish and chips.

Exactly what I was just saying to someone. Its often hard enough getting an agreement from a group of friends on Indian/Chinese/English but what is the chance of everyone wanting battered fish and chips? Don't get me wrong, if in the mood I like fish and chips, but the idea of going out specifically to all eat it when not at the seaside (Especially Llandudno, love that place) seems unlikely. It'll be a one trick pony, visit once for novelty then go elsewhere.

I can only imagine they were skint after the refurb and hadn't factored in getting stock levels right over the first few weeks so had very high wastage. But even so, they were full at the weekends so if that trade couldn't carry them through the leaner week days (and I've been told they were still fairly busy) then it was a doomed business model from the start.

Wonder if they'll change the windows now, can't see battered octopus being on the new menu. They better do curry sauce and pickled onions!

The refurb seemed to take forever, not sure exactly how long but I'd say a good year. Paying rent all that time on a business not bringing in money. spending all that cash on doing it up. Selling a product like whole lobster and giant steaks that cost a fortune to buy but not knowing how much they actually needed to buy - I'd say a good loss was made on that. BUT those are the kind of things you factor in when starting up and make sure you have funds to fall back on.
If it was me I wouldn't have made this change until after Christmas. they could have recouped a good lot of that loss with people booking Christmas parties.

Agreed, they'd opened just in time to get things right for the party season. A month or so to address teething problems then enjoy the busiest period of the year.

I was looking forward to trying the lobster next time, and I heard great things about the rolled pork. Oh well.

We were going to have our Christmas meal there. As much as I love curry sauce and picked onions they haven't quite got that festive feel have they?

Has the previous chef left, therefore, they've decided to simplify the menu? However, surely it would be easier to recruit a new chef than change the whole ethos of the place.

I can't imagine a chef that is capable of cooking the variety of dishes that it used to offer would be satisfied just cooking fish and chips. Also the staff that were enticed to work there on the premise that they will be serving high quality food are also likely to be miffed!

It's a completely odd decision.

My guess and it is only a guess is that they will make more money selling fish and chips to the students at the nearby college. I recall there being a fish and chip restaraunt in the town centre where or near to Waterstones. That always looked busy to me.

I know of a new restaurant that is opening in Stafford next year that is very 'different' - it's top secret though and I cannot divulge any information ;)
Keeping secrets from your fellow forumites, isnt that some sort of crime ?. are you really going to torture us for a year :ohno:
